I loved this finale. I'm not entirely sure I understood the ending of the episode, but who the fuck cares. This was a wild ride and such a fun way to spend 44 minutes.
Okay, so, Caroline is determined for everyone to have a normal, happy graduation (no surprise there) and basically bullies everyone into showing up. Unfortunately, Bonnie is dead, but since the veil is still down, she has the opportunity to go. And she makes sure to say good bye like things to her friends as Grams suggested.
The veil goes back up that night, so everyone is taking the opportunity to hang out with their dead friends. Stefan and Lexi try to spend as much time together as possible. Same for Damon and Alaric. And Elena and Jeremy.
Elena gets a call from who she thinks is Matt, but it turns out to be one of the hunters that is dead. He tells her to bring the cure and Silas to the grill or he'll start killing all the innocent people in the place. Alaric shows up and after being threatened by Connor to blow the bar up, Alaric whisks him away and the explosion is contained.
And speaking of explosives, the 1000 year old One of Five guy has decided to toy with Rebekah but holding Matt hostage on some kind of detonator. If he steps off of it, he'll blow up. I'm not really sure what this dude's end game is. Why not just kill Rebekah and be done with it? What does Matt have to do with any of this. Either way, Rebekah, does some vampire trickery, and while she's kissing Matt, she switches there place so she ends up on the bomb. She tells Matt to run and once he's a good enough distance away, she zooms off, speeding away before the bomb can detonate.
While all this is going on, Damon has been shot with a bullet that laced with werewolf venom and isn't healing. He and Elena argue about the cure. He still wants her to take it, but she refuses. She suggests maybe Damon should take it since, you know, he's dying right now. But he refuses as well, claiming he wouldn't be able to have Elena for only a few years before he died as a human. It was destroy him.
At some point, Elena tells Damon that she loves him. She chooses him. And we get some delightful kissing. I'm gonna be so disappointed if we don't get at least a good chunk of next season with them together. I get they will probably break up at some point, it's a drama after all, but give me just a little bit of happiness, please.
So, we need Klaus. His blood is the only other cure. Caroline has called him dozens of times but he's not answering her. Shortly after graduation (I think) Klaus shows up and heals Damon. Caroline asks how he got there so fast, and he claims he was already on his way. He wanted to giver her, her graduation gift: Tyler's freedom. He tells her that Tyler is her first love, but he intends to be her last. Come on. If I wasn't already warmed up to Klaus, this would have done me in.
Plus, Kol and the dead hybrids show up at graduation, threatened to kill everyone if Bonnie does leave the veil down permanently. Turn out, Kol rather enjoyed being alive. Bonnie leads him to a basement where he stumbles upon her dead body. She tells him she wants to leave the veil down as well because she doesn't wanna be dead either. And once Kol is all excited about it, she tells him, she wants to, but she's not going to. Then, magically locks him up in there until the full moon.
Elena and Katherine run into each other in the hallway. Katherine has decided that Elena is the bane of her existence and has ruined, and stolen her life. (This sounds very similar to Elena's feeling about Katherine last episode). The two of them fight, but Elena isn't strong enough and it's not long before Katherine gets the better of her. However, Elena happens to have the cure on her and smashes it down Katherine's throat. And she immediately falls over and passes out, leaving her (theoretically) human. Dude. She is gonna be so fucking pissed.
Shortly after that, Bonnie raises the veil and our ghost friend start disappearing. However, when it's over, Jeremy is still alive. Bonnie's spell worked. I wonder if she ended up giving her life for his. You know, all this magical balance and all.
And then we get to the end, where I was confused. So, Stefan is busy getting ready to dump Silas's stoned up body into the quarry. However, when he opens the bag, Elena shows up and tells him Silas isn't in there. When Bonnie died, it freed him. (Elena is Silas). He claims when he made himself immortal, they had to be a balance so a dopplegänger was created that could be killed. Then he turns himself into a copy of Stefan. Are we supposed to think that Stefan is his dopplegäger? Silas is 2000 years old. Stefan is like 200. Why would they wait 1800 years before they fixed this loophole? And what is Stefan died some other way? Maybe I read it wrong and this is something else entirely and not a dopplegänger situation?
Regardless, Stefan is caught off guard by this and Silas (who looks like Stefan, that must have been so freaky), stabs him in the chest, locks him in a safe, and tosses him into the quarry. Our last shots are of Stefan trapped in the safe with water pouring in.
How the hell are we supposed to fix this? I can't remember if anyone other than Lexi (who's gone) knows that Stefan was going to the quarry. He and Damon had that quick conversation about Elena choosing Damon before he left, but I was focused on that and can't remember if he mentioned where he was taking Silas. How can we save him if we don't know where he is? Grrrr.
