Okay, so Lena's family is coming for dinner, and she's ready to confront her brother about him calling her mom the N-word, like, 20 years ago or something. And Lena is still pissed about it. Especially since he never apologized. Her mom just wants Lena to let it go, but she can't. And dad never even knew it happened. However, we find out that brother is bringing his girlfriend, and Lena's mad about that too because now she's not sure how to approach this with company in the house.
And it gets even more confusing when the girlfriend he brings is Black. Lena struggles to keep her mouth shut until she can't anymore. The brother is apologizing about some other bullshit, when Lena demands an apology for her mom about the word. Brother acts like he has no idea what they are talking about. Dad suggests maybe mom heard wrong. But she says, she's sure. And dad throws them out of the house. Brother is pissed that dad is taking his wife's word over his and they leave. When dad asks mom why she never told him, she says it's because she thought he'd never forgive him. And he tells her she was right.
Meanwhile, the kids are all at the beach for the day. And Callie runs into Cole who is happy and in an LGBTQ group home. He's had top surgery and seems in great spirits. Apparently, he's hosting some sort of queer prom and invites Jude and Connor to go. Callie asks who his date is and he tells her he doesn't have one and she suggests asking her. I 100% thought this was a friend thing. But, as Cole goes in the water, A.J. turns to her and tells her Cole thinks it's a date. She doesn't buy it and never did it. We were both wrong.
At the dance they are having a good time until Cole tries to kiss her. She backs away and he gets a little pissed at being rejected and heads outside for some air. When he comes back, he accuses Callie of not wanting to date him because she doesn't see him as a man. She denies this and is upset about it. And I think she has every right to be. She's always treated Cole like a man. Anyway, they make up pretty quickly and it seems like they're good.
However, Connor and Jude are also having a little issue. As soon as they get there, they are approached by some people who introduce themselves with their names and orientation. Connor responds in kind, saying he's gay. But Jude refuses to give himself a label claiming he's 'Just Jude.' Shortly after, one of the people who introduced themselves, asks Connor about it and he says Jude just doesn't like labels. And then is told that if he can't say he's gay, he might not be. And Connor should make sure not to get his heart broken.
And then Connor starts like straight up being mean to Jude. These people must have gotten in his head. Jude wants to leave and Connor tells him to go ahead and then just ignores him. Jude heads outside and runs into Cole and they have a bit of a conversation about labels. That seems to do it for Jude. He goes back to Connor and introduces himself as Jude, and gay. And they seem good again.
Oh, and Brandon gets kicked out of the music program and Mariana breaks up with Matt. (Neither of these things are as insignificant as I am acting like they are. Lol.)
