Goonew's Final Performance

Hello Deathlings,

I really do love that this video is like Ask a Mortician All-Stars. Few things warm my cold, dead, cynical heart like being able to collaborate with a team of thoughtful and brilliant death educators. Pinch me, it's a dream.

Of course I'm talking about embalmer and desairologist extraordinaire Monica Torres (who consulted with us) and death scholar and author Dr. Kami Fletcher.

From the get go, we knew that if we wanted to do this video right, really talk about Goonew's death and funeral, we needed to bring in the EXPERTS. Dr. Fletcher especially – she just cuts to the core of issues. No BS. Just the heart of the matter. If you aren't following her work, YOU SHOULD BE.

As always, THANK YOU for your support. When we make videos like this, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to be able to control our content – the stories we tell, the people we talk with. Your support and good faith make that a reality.

And, for those of you at the $5+ pledge tier, if you also want to support the Order and our other charitable endeavors, check out my SECRET Shop for the latest Limited Edition item – a buttery, vegan/cruelty free sugar scrub that smells of apples, patchouli, and black currants. A little self care goes a long way these days, deathlings.

Thank you and onward!

*A quick, but important clarification: If you clicked on this post from your email, the subject probably read, "Caitlin Doughty's new patron-only video". This is not a patron-only video; this is a video that was released to the public. When we release patron-only videos we will explicitly state in the video info and in the video post that it is a "Patron Exclusive" video. Patreon recently changed the way Patrons-only video posts (i.e. these nifty messages that are delivered to your inbox) are released via email – automatically adding that "patron-only video" line to the subject, even if that's not the case. But that's not how we (and a lot of other creators) do things. So, sorry for the confusion! I hope this cleared things up! We're working on fixing this with Patreon.

You showed Mickey Easterling’s body for a hot second, and her funeral was also a party! Not in a funeral home. Her family had her sitting up with her bottle of champagne, crystal goblet, and smokes in the Saenger Theatre lobby while 1,000+ people milled around drinking and eating like any other socialite gathering. It made the news but wasn’t *that* big of a story. No one telling the family they “did it wrong” or where “being disrespectful” cuz old white lady with money had a “quirky” funeral. I’m always floored to see the extreme embalming and for me there is always a bit of the uncanny valley/ wax figure that makes my brain squirm but I don’t see anything wrong with it, especially when it brings comfort to the family. As for charging folks- down here there are a lot of memorial events that raise money to help pay for the funeral or help support the family of the deceased so I don’t see much difference between that and this.
