Come For the Bone Houses, Stay For the Sardines

Greetings Deathlings,

I realize we have common interests and the mere fact that you're here reading this already sort of answers this question, but I'm curious: when you travel, whether it's Cuba, MO or the island country of Cuba, what are the first things you look up to visit?

Museums? Architecture? Most exxxtreme water slide?

For me it's pretty reliably food and cemeteries (or a grave/burial/death related site). Let's face it (sigh), in the back of my head I'm always thinking, "Could this be a video?"

When there's a darling little coffee shop adjacent to the cemetery? I feel like I've been personally welcomed into the community.

Being in Portugal checked so many of these boxes for me. Stunning cemeteries (and ossuaries, obviously); beautiful, fresh food from the land and sea; strong coffee culture game.

This was one of this videos I didn't expect to film (or be able to film) just a few months ago, but taking you along on this "field trip" was so much fun. I felt a little bit like it was the good old days of Ask a Mortician – me tromping around Los Angeles or Hawaii or a clown motel, sharing my deathstinations with you. Of course, this is the next level-glow up version of the clown motel. (No shade on the clown motel and neighboring cemetery in Tonopah, Nevada – I still think you should go there.)

So I hope you enjoy the field trip deathlings – EVERYWHERE I GO, YOU ARE IN MY HEART.

Oh! And if you're so inclined $5+ tier Patrons, don't forget to check out my SECRET Shop for this month's LIMITED EDITION item – a hand embroidered skull compact. I just love the thought of a deathling lifting this from their bag in a cemetery adjacent cafe to check their makeup or bangs. Might this be you?

[Photo of closed metal compact, the top of which is embroidered with the image of skull crowned with flowers.]

And as always, sales from this item go to supporting The Order of the Good Death and it's only available while supplies last or until the next video drops. They're gone baby gone after that.

Thank you for being here deathlings! May your travels near or far be safe!

*A quick, but important clarification: If you clicked on this post from your email, the subject probably read, "Caitlin Doughty's new patron-only video". This is not a patron-only video; this is a video that was released to the public. When we release patron-only videos we will explicitly state in the video info and in the video post that it is a "Patron Exclusive" video. Patreon recently changed the way Patrons-only video posts (i.e. these nifty messages that are delivered to your inbox) are released via email – automatically adding that "patron-only video" line to the subject, even if that's not the case. But that's not how we (and a lot of other creators) do things. So, sorry for the confusion! I hope this cleared things up! We're working on fixing this with Patreon.

This is an amazing video, i always enjoy the care that you take in research and information about these. I was wondering if you like playing games? there is a new game that came out on steam called the mortuary assistant, and i think it would be fun to see a mortician play it and maybe get insight on how much of the stuff in the game is maybe accurate or not. (its also a horror game though so its got supernatural stuff in it)
