Death, Design, and a Doner Kebab

Hello Deathlings,

Anybody here ever been to Hudson Yards or Vessel in NYC?

(The Hudson Yards website says "Vessel" not "the Vessel" as in, "Let's meet at Vessel!" The press largely says "the Vessel" but I thought I'd give JUST VESSEL a try and then give a too-long explanation about the awkwardness. You're welcome.)

I've been fascinated by (the) Vessel from the beginning. Seeing it for the first time as the centerpiece of the wealth-forward atmosphere in Hudson Yards made my stomach flip-flop. Ugh. I literally had a gut reaction. So many issues sprang to mind. The intense security around (the) Vessel added to the pit in my stomach.

But I genuinely wasn't sure if I was just being ol' "Buzzkill Caitlin". Then I did some very preliminary research and saw that nope, my gut was right.

When Producer Louise and I were deciding on the next videos to do, this one popped up as an interesting but unlikely candidate. I think we both said it was kind of "left field" for the channel, but we couldn't stop talking about it. Sometimes first drafts can feel like a JOB but this one practically wrote itself.

Thank you Patrons, for helping us tell these "left field" stories. We didn't monetize this video, but even when we do, YOU are still the engine that keeps us going. Choo choo!

I also want to give our Patreon wizard Ericka, a shoutout here! You may remember her as the person who is helping you troubleshoot pledge stuff, account stuff, password stuff, etc. I don't know what I'd do without her. Not only has she been a star at supporting and facilitating new Patron content, but she has knocked it out of the park (so much baseball talk) with my SECRET shop. In her always-thoughtful way, she came up with a lovely little planter – parsley seeds and soil included! – to pair with this video. I've long since abandoned my green thumb, but this one might earn a place in my home.

Go forth deathlings! Wishing you cheerful spaces and gentle days,

Caitlin

i just wanted to let you know that i’ve had some pretty bad mental health days in the last year or so since this video and i’ve consistently thought back to the “instant regret” thing and that knowledge alone may have saved my life

I shared this video with my family, and my mother loved it. She's from the East Coast and believes that design should consider the safety of others. Especially in regards to mental health. You covered this difficult topic well, and I think it will inspire others to make necessary changes in the future.
