Ahoy Deathlings!
Today we bring you a tale that cashes in on so many of our greatest fears:
Cannibalism
Your ship sinking
Starvation/dehydration
"Survivor" But Make it Maybe/Probably Racist
Whales
OK, maybe that last one is one of MY greatest fears, but if you were in wee a lil' boat on the great big ocean and you glanced down and saw THIS:

You tell me you wouldn't question your life choices.
(Yes, yes I know that this picture is "unproven" according to Snopes, but STILL.)
You may also be asking, "Caitlin, we get it, you fear the whales. So...why do they keep popping up in your videos?"
Sigh. Because I'm a sucker for a good story.
I picked up Nathaniel Philbrick's riveting book, In the Heart of the Sea while I was traveling. I'd read Moby Dick, so I figured I could hang with the Essex. And while yes, I knew I was signing up for a WHALE OF A TALE, the story was SO much more than I expected – so much WORSE to be exact.
Of course we had to make a video.
And the rest is maritime video history!
I hope you "enjoy" this episode. If nothing else, feast your eyes on the editing and graphics job Landis did with this one. Our longest video to date, nary a day went by for the last three months that Landis did not sit with the crew of the Essex. When he finally finished editing it, he feasted on hard tack. I'm not kidding.

Take care of yourselves, deathlings! May this deathy whale content be a worthy diversion.
From an appropriate distance,
Caitlin
*A quick, but important clarification: If you clicked on this post from your email, the subject probably read, "Caitlin Doughty's new patron-only video". This is not a patron-only video; this is a video that was released to the public. When we release patron-only videos we will explicitly state in the video info and in the video post that it is a "Patron Exclusive" video. Patreon recently changed the way Patrons-only video posts (i.e. these nifty messages that are delivered to your inbox) are released via email – automatically adding that "patron-only video" line to the subject, even if that's not the case. But that's not how we (and a lot of other creators) do things. So, sorry for the confusion! I hope this cleared things up! We're working on fixing this with Patreon.
