Hello Deathlings!
Today we have a new article for you about something I know nothing about: video games.
That's not to say that I don't love what video games can do for people – in this case provide opportunities for ritual and community when grieving. I'll tell you what Sarah told me when she sent me this article: grab a tissue.
In "Exploring Grief in Animal Crossing: New Horizons", video game developer Gabby DaRienzo takes us through the various ways that people are building virtual memorials for people in Animal Crossing when they can't physically be there. In a world where lack of personal connection is taking its toll on our mental health, Animal Crossing is allowing us to build new connections, new routines, and new ways to honor those we love. It isn't a replacement for human contact, but I still think it's kind of magical. A beautiful addition.
This really struck a chord with me:
Although mourners may not be able to maintain their rituals in real life, Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives players the opportunity to find a daily routine filled with small but positive actions, and encourages the player to return to the game every day — even just for a little bit — to maintain this routine. Unable to visit their father’s memorial, Twitter user @aduenas99 created one for him instead, commenting “Because of the quarantine we can’t go visit him, but at least I can do it on my island… I’m glad we all can find a little comfort in doing this.”
Take care of yourselves out there deathlings – I hope you're finding those small comforts in your daily life.
And to supply you with some additional diversion, we have a new video coming soon, a real whale of a tale!
Onward deathlings!
