I know that this shouldn't the thing that sticks out to me, but what school has all the kids doing better in math than English? That just seems insane to me.
Anyway, Callie gets a call in the middle of the night from Kiara begging for help. Callie wakes up Stef who heads over to her foster home and discovers that some guy who was buying drugs from her foster parents starting wielding a knife and generally just acting like someone high on drugs. She'd grabbed the other kids and barricaded them in a bedroom. Stef manages to get her out of there and she stays with the Fosters for a day or two.
Stef and Callie both go about trying to find a safer place for her to go, but all that takes time, and, in the mean time, they want to put Kiara back in the same home. After finding no solutions, Kiara decides to run away to Vegas, where she knows some people, rather than go back to that home. Sad.
Meanwhile, Wyatt wants to run away again as well. He invites Callie to join him and since she's in a weird place with Brandon (and everything going on with her biological dad) she considers it. Eventually, she says yes, but when she meets up with him as he's leaving, she changes her mind and goes back home.
Speaking of Brandon, he's busy trying to convince his parents that he should be allowed to tour with the band for the summer. Surprisingly, the one parent who thinks this is a good idea is Stef. I think it's a fine idea, honestly. Generally speaking, Brandon is a good kid. He's 17. I think this would be a great experience for him. By the end of the episode though, both Stef and Lena have switched their thoughts on it. So now, Lena is the only one who thinks it's a good idea. That's more what I expected in the beginning. However, he hasn't said anything to them about the summer music program. Which I also think is a great idea. He's got an embarrassment of riches thing happening right now.
And poor Mariana is stuck with yet another stupid storyline. She's really good at math and tries to downplay it so her boyfriend won't be intimidated by her. I mean, I guess we do need some relief from the constant barrage of drama and trauma in this show, so I suppose I should be thankful. But, I'm hoping that we come back to the way she feels about her culture and whether she should distance herself from it because of Ana. That was a really interesting storyline for her.
Oh, and we might end up needing to fire Timothy. Apparently, the test score at Anchor Beach aren't that great, so the new principal wants us to start teaching to them, which is everything Timothy came to this school to avoid. And I'm with him. I find standardized tests to be such bullshit. Plus, anyone can memorize a bunch of facts and forget about them later. When you do this, you learn nothing. Teach kids how to think critically, how to be creative, how to be rational and logical. There is zero reason for them to remember when year the 12th president of the United States took office.
Callie, after failing to help Kiara out of her situation, ends up heading back to the drop in center (who couldn't help Kiara fast enough) and asked if she could volunteer there for her independent study. Oh yeah, Callie is going to have to do summer school and possibly repeat a bunch of classes because all the moving around messed up her transcripts. Can nothing ever be easy for this poor girl?
