Getting a Good Deal When You Have to Deal With Death

Hello Deathlings!

I feel like there are two general types of people:

1) People who dive fearlessly into a negotiation, bargaining with aplomb until they feel satisfied that $3 is a steal for that vintage prairie pickle dish.

and

2) People who shudder at the thought of negotiating and will say SOUNDS GOOD and pay $57 for the same pickle dish.

I admire those of you who fall into the former category. In my natural state, I am firmly in the latter category.

And while I'm no ace at haggling a bargain, dealing with the funeral industry has taught me a thing or two about getting a fair price for a funeral. I'm not going to say it's painless to have to ask about ALL THOSE PRICES, but I do think that it's something we're all capable of doing.

So to help you out a bit, we created this video.

I hope you share it (or the linked article) around with friends and family. The hagglers in your life will salivate; the I-paid-$57-for-a-cracked-pickle-dish people might feel empowered.

I just want you to save money.

This is the second of three videos this month! Next week we have a video that I had a lot of OPINIONS on. I hope you do too.

So go forth deathlings! Sharpen your bargaining skills! Get your pickle dishes (how many times can I say pickle dish in one post?) and get the funeral you and your loved ones deserve!

*A quick, but important clarification: If you clicked on this post from your email, the subject probably read, "Caitlin Doughty's new patron-only video". This is not a patron-only video; this is a video that was released to the public. When we release patron-only videos we will explicitly state in the video info and in the video post that it is a "Patron Exclusive" video. Patreon recently changed the way Patrons-only video posts (i.e. these nifty messages that are delivered to your inbox) are released via email – automatically adding that "patron-only video" line to the subject, even if that's not the case. But that's not how we (and a lot of other creators) do things. So, sorry for the confusion! I hope this cleared things up! We're working on fixing this with Patreon.
