The Power and Privilege of Sharing a Bed With the Dead

Buckle up deathlings, have we got a story for you this week!

From Sarah:

I've wanted to work with Maria J. Perez Cuervo, the author of this week's article, for a couple years now. Her Twitter account is one of my favorites, and the obscure history she digs up never fails to evoke a sense of awe and sometimes, as in her new piece for us, shock.

A few weeks ago she mentioned a king who obsessively collected relics, including entire corpses, thousands of bones and skulls and cared for them lovingly as though they were cherished pets. The story she ended up writing us, The Royals Who Shared Their Beds With Mummies, is even stranger and more enlightening than we could have imagined - I hope you enjoy it.

Here's a bit of bonus trivia for you that didn't make it into Maria's article. This centuries old automaton of a monk is believed to have been commissioned by King Philip II, "after Philip’s son had recovered from a deathly illness. The king of Spain had prayed for his son’s recovery, promising a miracle for a miracle, and this machine of prayer was meant to be his earthly miracle."

And with this FA-SCI-NATING article, we're only halfway through this month's content! On Saturday we have a NEW video for you, and next week we have a NEW Death in the Afternoon episode and a NEW article!

Who loves you, deathlings?

Wishing you good bedfellows for all of your days,

Caitlin
