We Were the Lucky Ones 1X7: Monte Cassino

Well, we got one good thing this episode. We've found Selim! He's fine, working as a doctor and he, Genek and Herta are reunited. That's about all the happiness I can offer though. Sigh.

Genek did manage to get into the Polish army and things have been going okay. They've traveled a bunch and have enough to eat and are able to take care of the baby. But, it's still an unknown. No idea when you'll be sent somewhere new. Easy to die.

While Genek is in the medical tent getting diagnosed for abdominal pain (ulcer from going from underconsumption of food to a regular amount of food) he hears a voice that sounds familiar. And it's Selim. He runs over and they embrace and excitedly start talking. It's easily one of the best (and only good) things we've had for a while.

Halina, Adam, and Mila aren't doing so well in Warsaw. There is near constant fighting and bombs going off. Halina's boss is moving to Krakow and offers her a job, but she claims she can't leave the family here that depending on her. However, it doesn't take long for Warsaw to be consumed by soldiers. All the Jews are being rounded up. It's not a whole lot of fun. When their building is bombed, they decide they need to figure out a plan.

Adam goes with Mila to find Felicia, and Halina decides to get on a train to Krakow sure that her former boss will help her. However, when they get to the convent, they find it has been bombed and reduced to rubble. Felicia (and it least several others) are alive but it's a really terrible situation. Halina is not fairing any better. When the train gets to Krakow, there are shit ton of soldier waiting at the station looking for papers (I assume Halina's are in the apartment they fled from when it was blown up) so Halina tries to escape but it caught and thrown in jail. She claims she's not Jewish, but no one is paying attention to her.

Unfortunately, Genek and Selim have been called to active duty. They are heading into Italy to try to capture a monastery (that multiple armies have been thwarted trying to do up until now). Genek is not happy about it. He feels (rightly so) that's it's basically a suicide mission, but the rest of the troops are super into it. I don't know if this is just national pride or what, but they are so excited to die for Poland.

And Addy is living in Rio. He and Eliska have broken up (good riddance), but he's not having a great time. While things are so much better there for Jews than other places, it's not like it's a paradise. Plus, he's been writing dozens of letters to his family, but he can't find them. Eventually, he meets a nice girl (who seems much better suited for him than Eliska) and they seems to be getting along very well. It seems to inspire him to compose again, which he does on Eliska's mom's piano.

I mean, we've only got one episode left. Unless this episode is over 2 hours long, I have no idea how I am going to be satisfied with the conclusion. I finally broke down tonight and asked Dan to explain this war to me (he was so happy!), but I'm 1000% sure that once I finish, I'm gonna be googling the hell out of this.
