I 100% thought that when Damon asked Elena what she was doing, she was going to reveal that she was just trying to keep him occupied for something that Stefan asked her to do and my heart was ready to be broken for Damon. This is somewhat better though. Confused Elena is definitely better than rips Damon's heart out Elena.
Anyway, Elena and Damon head up to Colorado to get Jeremy as they are concerned for him now that Klaus knows where he is. Stefan wants them to go together so Elena can work out how she feels about Damon. Basically, as soon as they get there, they find out that Jeremy's new friend is Kol. Fun. Damon manages to stake him, which allows the three of them to flee to a motel. Which leads us to the other reason we're here, we need Jeremy to talk to Rose on the other side to see who sired her.
While we wait for more information from Rose, Elena is busy trying to figure out how she feels about Damon. She's watching him from bed as he wanders around the room drinking shirtless. Eventually, he gets into bed with her and they hold hands, which sort of freaks her out and she runs out of the room. He chases her and they make out delightfully outside, but end up getting interrupted by Jeremy. Boo.
Turns out, it wasn't an Original, but some Mary lady that Damon knows. Rose tells them where she lives so they head over there. But, unfortunately, Kol beat them there and has already killed Mary. He also knows that they are trying to figure out which Original started their bloodline, so he refuses to give up any info. At this point, Damon asks Elena what she's doing, and she tells him that Stefan thinks she loves him and she's trying to find out if it's true. He then tells her he's not going to make it easy for her and bow out of the equation (you know, like he's been doing for 3 seasons now). Ugh. Just let me have this please.
Back home, Stefan is babysitting Alaric, trying to see if he'll turn into evil Alaric so they can figure out where the damn stake is. But it's not working. Eventually, Klaus shows up and finds out the stake is missing and he kills Alaric to try to bring evil Alaric to the surface so we can figure it out. Stefan hangs around and waits for him to come back to life. He does, but he's still good Alaric, so Stefan basically just beats the shit out of him until evil Alaric shows up and tells him that the stake is in the cave (in that little cubby that vampires can't get into).
Also, Esther shows back up and tells Rebekah that she's dying. Then she just sort of drops dead on the floor. Klaus walks in and Rebekah is all, mom died. But somehow or other, Esther put her body in Rebekah's and pretended to be her, long enough to follow Alaric to the cave. But, since she's actually a witch, not a vampire, she can get in. Then, she surprises Alaric by telling him, she wants to kill all the Originals. Mom is really still hell bent on killing all her kids.
And Caroline and Tyler have a bit of a reunion. I was really concerned that Tyler was going to do something bad to Caroline under Klaus' orders, but it turned out, he was the only who was hurt when he found the picture that Klaus drew of her. I can understand why he'd be upset. Typically, it bothers me when people get upset about things that happened when they weren't together, but this is different. It's Klaus. I know that Caroline was playing a part, but then why keep the drawing?
