Friday Night Lights 5X9: Gut Check

I really enjoyed this episode. It seemed like the perfect blend of football and drama.

So, the Lions finally lost a game. The coaches are blaming (amongst themselves- not to the team) Vince. They think he's lost control of the team. And he kind of has. It's all me, me, me. Vince asks him to work with Luke as a backup QB. Vince doesn't want to, but reluctantly agrees. However, he never shows up to the session, and Luke is left there along. Jess comes by and tries to work with him. But she's fed up with this new Vince too and ends up breaking up with him.

After hearing that Vince didn't show, he benches him for the game on Friday and tells Luke that he's playing QB in the game. Vince, his dad, and Luke are all kind of stunned. Luke does the best he can in practice, but this kid is not a quarterback. The night before the game, he shows up at Eric's and begs him to play Vince instead of him, but to no avail.

The game is not going well. With about two minutes left in the game, Luke again, begs Eric to put in Vince, but Eric tells him to go back out and runs the plays he wants to run. With the green light to do whatever he wants, he manages to get the team back in it, and win the game (securing a playoff spot). However, afterwards, Vince's dad is pissed. He tries to storm the field to go after Eric, but Vince holds him. He promises his dad that he'll arrange a meeting, but not right now.

In other news, Mindy is pregnant again. Billy is thrilled, but Mindy not so much at first. Becky took on her waitressing gig one day when she felt sick and after learning how much she could make it tips, wants to make it permanent, but so far, Mindy is refusing.

Julie ends up spending the week with Matt. It's great, but eventually, he has to question why she is here and not living her own life. As she finally leaves (although, I have no idea where she's going), he says they will work it out, whatever it is, and they tell each other they love the other still.

Epyck gets accused of stealing some money out of a teacher's purse. While in a meeting with Tami, the teacher grabs Epyck's bag to search it.; Epyck fights for the bag and accidentally knocks Tami's head into a wall. Even though Tami begs them not to, they end up arresting her and she gets moved to a new foster home. I assume that will probably be the last we hear form her.
