The Vampire Diaries 2X4: Memory Lane

Ugh. Why is this show so good? I don't know if people like Katherine, but I think the episodes are so much more fun when she's around. I mean, she's certainly not one of my favorite characters, but stuff is sure interesting when she's around.

So, Katherine has again tried to trick Stefan into thinking she's Elena. And it works for a bit longer this time. However, he was literally waking up from a very vivid dream, so that's got to be disorienting. I won't hold this against him. However, I will say that he's had ample opportunities to kill her at this point, and neither he, nor Damon have been able to do it. (Yet, they both claim she no longer has a hold over them).

Turns out, Katherine is using Caroline as her lapdog. She's been tasked with keeping Elena away from Stefan. And, since Elena hasn't heard from Stefan all day, she's concerned and plans to head over to his house. Caroline tries to stall, and eventually tells Elena she'll drive her, but pops her tire beforehand, so they end up waiting for a tow truck. While they wait, Caroline keeps telling Elena and that it'll never work out between her and Stefan and she's got to face the truth. Eventually, Elena just leaves and walks the rest of the way to the Salvatore's.

Meanwhile, Stefan has been keep Katherine chained up in the basement cell and been using vervain to keep her contained. He wasn't answers, but all she's really telling him is that she came back for him, she loves him, and eventually, he'll remember that he loves her too. She tells him if he doesn't stay away from Elena, she'll kill her. (And turns out, Katherine has been drinking vervain forever, so this is all a ruse on her part). We also get some backstory and find out that it was basically Katherine's idea to trap all the vampire's in the church and set it on fire (although, I'm not exactly sure why). She made a deal with George Lockwood (who was a werewolf) to bring her into the church, but smuggle her out before it got set on fire to fake her death. In exchange, she'd give him the nifty werewolf stone that Mason has been looking for.

And, speaking of Mason, at a BBQ Jenna is throwing, Damon and Alaric try to suss out whether he is a werewolf or not. Eventually, after a zillion dog jokes and innuendoes (not to mention being presented with a silver knife), Mason tells Damon that they both know what each other are, but don't need to be enemies. Damon agrees. But later, after Mason leaves, Damon follows him and stabs him with a silver knife. Which does nothing. Turns out, silver killing werewolves was a myth perpetuated by werewolves themselves.

Later, at the grill, Caroline apologizes to Elena, but continues to listen in on her and Stefan's conversation. They complain about how Katherine is trying to come between them and break them up. And it's useless to fight against her, as she's already winning. Both Caroline and Damon overhear this. However, we find out later, that it was all for their benefit and everything is actually fine between them. They just wanted to make sure that info got back to Katherine.

At the very end of the episode, we see a flashback of Katherine after she's escaped the church. She goes to the dead bodies of Stefan and Damon, but only cradles Stefan and tells him she loves him and they'll find their way back to each other some day. Is it possible that she's serious? The only reason she's back here is to try to win Stefan back? I have no idea what I believe. But I do know that I wanna watch the next episode. 🤣
