Endless sheets of falling rain pummeled the reinforced concrete roof of Geschutzbunker E. With it came a cool, sweet wind off the ocean's tumultuous surface. The occasional strike of lightning off the aluminum buoys a few hundred yards away granted intermittent visibility; the inky darkness and impressive rain was otherwise impenetrable to the naked eye.

I shifted my weight boredly from one foot to the other, chewing my lower lip a bit. When storms like this one came through the Baltic, the Doc grew paranoid about infiltration by saboteurs. Wiping a bit of rain off the receiver of the antique MG34, I pondered how anyone could even find this little island in this weather.

Tonight marked my two week "anniversary" as employment on the security team here. I had caught only fleeting glimpses of the monsters he created here, and they made my skin crawl in a most awful way. The heavy, antique machinegun before me made me wonder who, or what, I was more likely to use it against. It was a bizarre thing- stamped DOU 44, the thing looked as though it had been built a week ago. The clunky binoculars, with 10 X 50 magnification, were probably as old, but showed their age. Where did that crazy fuck get this stuff?

Through the driving rain, the communicator on the wall emitted a loud buzz, about five seconds in length, enough to make me jump. My heart began to pound as I stepped over to it to see what it wanted- an alarm?

"Infiltration exercises are underway... do not fire... on opposing forces... sight and report. End."

I was at once put to ease and flooded with anxiety. Infiltration exercises? Do not fire on opposing forces? Who is infiltrating? Other members of the security team? To prevent any horrible accidents, I activated the safety on the MG34. Someone had helpfully painted, in sprawling freehand, "SHORT bursts!" over the fire direction panel. For some reason, my heart was in my throat. My hands clasped and relaxed shakily. What now?

I peered into the darkness and rain. For those who have ever been on watch in the rain knows how awful the experience is. Every raindrop is the footstep of an enemy, every drop is the safety of an AK being disengaged. I plunged into madness, absurdity. Why was I alone? I thought I heard a growl. I stepped back from the bunker slit, attempting to escape the sensory overload. I felt the cool fabric of my gloves on my face as I rubbed my eyes.

I screamed as in the dim light, the door flew open. I was knocked to the floor. It pinned me, what was it? It didn't look like a soldier...

In the darkness I could see slitted eyes. If you're there, God... please... help me...

"God's not here, only me," it said. It was one of those wretched monsters, a dinosaur, it could speak. Apparently I had said that last bit aloud.

"You win! You got me!" I cried. The beast answered only in a deep growl, rubbing herself against me. "I'm new," I added weakly, embarrassed at my own tone of voice.

It laughed.

She

laughed. It was a girl dinosaur, I could see that now... She was tugging my trousers down. I felt as if to faint.
