The Vampire Diaries 1X20: Blood Brothers

I really, really liked this episode. And I finally got the answer to 'how the hell did Katherine turn them?!'

So, after waking up in the cell, Stefan is refusing to eat. He's claiming he's making the choice the meant to when he originally got turned.

So, back in 1864, Katherine had been having both Stefan and Damon drinking from her for months before they died; Damon willingly, and Stefan by compulsion. When they are shot are killed (by their father, no less) during a melee of them letting Katherine escape, they both plan not to drink human blood, which is needed for the transition; if not, they die.

However, Stefan goes to try to talk to his dad. But his dad tells him they were dead to him the minute they got in league with the vampires, so he killed them. He then attempts to attack Stefan, but defending himself (and not knowing his own strength) he accidentally ends up hurting him and he starts bleeding. Unable to resist the hunger, Stefan feeds off his father.

Immediately feeling better, he wants to gift this feeling to Damon, so he brings him a girl to feed on. At first, Damon resists, but Stefan bites from her and allows some blood to flow which Damon is unable to resist, and he feeds and completes the transformation as well. Later, Damon tells them that they will leave for eternity and he will spend all of it making Stefan miserable for what he made him do.

In the present, Elena tries to coax Stefan out of the cell. But he tells her he doesn't want to see her and she needs to leave him alone. She refuses and continues to try to tell him he's better now. Eventually, she comes into the cell and gives him back his ring. She tells him that she knows he's ready and to come out when he feels the same. She leaves, leaving the cell door open.

After she hears the later part of the 'how they turned story' from Damon, Elena knows when Stefan means now and races to the cell where she finds the ring, but no Stefan. She eventually finds him and after quite some time, convinces him to put the ring on. They kiss and I guess all is well right now?

In other news, Pearl has decided that they are leaving after an interaction with John. Anna doesn't want to go, but reluctantly agrees. When she comes back from saying goodbye to Jeremy she finds both her mother and Harper (who was leaving with them) dead.

At the end, Damon admits that the reason he's been mad at Stefan is not because Stefan convinced him to transition, but because Stefan wasn't supposed to be a part of it. It was just supposed to be Damon and Katherine. Okay, fine. But be pissed at Katherine, not Stefan, who was literally compelled to drink from her! He didn't ask for it, anymore than you did. Oh, I forgot to mention that Emily cursed Stefan with feeling guilty every time he hurts someone because he has a pure heart. I'm not sure how this works, but I'll ask more questions about it in the future.

Also, Alaric goes to a bar and finds himself drinking next to Isobel. Right after he vowed to stop looking for her.

Comments

I get why most first time watchers don't catch up on Damon lying to Stefan pretending that he resented him for selfish reasons, since they spend the first half of the season presenting him as the pseudo villain/antagonist. Thinking him capable of selfless actions seems alien at this point in the show. You can sorta figure it out if you pay attention to his reaction to the earlier conversation with Elena when he gets offended at her accusations, because he knows he got the short end of the stick that time, but when Stefan comes back he turns around and says 'I hated you because I'm a dick.'

Nebulous Shooter

I love this episode because it gives more insight into the relationship of the brothers. When Damon told Stefan it was because Katherine turned Stefan, he was trying to make Stefan feel better. Damon and Stefan's relationship is complicated, but the one thing which stays true is Damon is extremely protective of Stefan. This has been shown multiple times already. Had Damon agreed with Stefan then it would have risked Stefan killing himself still as he hasn't recovered yet. Not going to touch Damon and Elena other than to say there's chemistry between them, possibly enhanced by their off-screen relationship. So although not a lot happened, you get a lot of background on Defan which helps you understand their motivations as the show goes on. It is an interesting twist that Stefan forced Damon to turn. He was grieving and thought he would be for eternity and Stefan chose to ignore that fact and make him turn. Isobel is a very intriguing character. I know there’s a lot of romance going on in this show but the true heart of the vampire diaries is the relationship between the brothers. Stefan and Damon are completely different in every aspect except that they need each other. That’s why Stefan turned Damon: he didn’t want to live eternally without his brother. And you are starting to see that Damon can’t live without Stefan either.
