So if you told me the premise of this episode, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it. However, I liked it much more than I thought I would have. I think because this was a very plot driven episode, I would have felt less of a connection to the characters, but I really quite liked it!
A fire breaks out during a prison riot and the 118 is on the scene. Our team is split into two, Buck and Eddie; and Bobby, Hen, and Ravi. Buck and Eddie get an injured guard to the ambulance with two escorts. The rest of the team stays behind to tend to an injured guard.
However, the escorts are soon revealed to be prisoners and they take the ambulance, along with Buck and Eddie hostage. One of the inmates demand that Buck and Eddie keep the guard alive. They work on him while being held at gunpoint. Eventually, they end up at the hospital where one of the guards takes Buck inside with the injured, leaving Eddie and the gunman in the ambulance.
Once inside, they see no one in the hospital. Suddenly, they are overtaken by police. Buck is trying to explain that he's a firefighter, but he's cuffed anyway. Thankfully, Athena is there and vouches for him. She asks about Eddie and Buck tells her he's still in the ambulance with the other prisoner.
Back outside, the prisoner is explaining the situation to Eddie. His son is at this hospital and he needs a heart transplant but the list is long and he might not make it. He offered to donate his heart, but death row inmates are not allowed to be donors. His plan was to force the doctor, at gunpoint, to give his heart to his son. Eddie tells him that's 100% not going to happen. But Eddie will fight tooth and nail to help his son get a heart. This seems to placate him and he agrees to come out of the ambulance.
Eddie emerges with his hands up, saying that Mitchell (I think the guy's name is Mitchell) is ready to surrender. As he exits the ambulance, he tells Eddie to also promise that his son won't know where the heart came from, and shoots himself in the head.
Hearing the gunshot from inside the hospital, Buck runs out in a panic concerned about Eddie. (Also, I should note that when the prisoner threatened to go after Christopher, Buck attacked him, but quickly got pistol whipped). However, when he gets there, he finds Eddie doing chest compressions on Mitchell. He tells Buck to tell the ER to get ready to the transplant.
Inside, Athena and her boss make a bunch of calls and arrange for the son to get the heart transplant.
Meanwhile, back at the prison, Bobby, Hen, and Ravi are trapped with the injured guard in the infirmary with the prison doctor. They come up with a plan to release laughing gas into the HVAC system to calm the prisoners down. It works out just fine. However, the doctor hurt his hand during the riot and cannot perform the surgery on the guard, so he talks Hen through it. Afterwards, she decides to specialize in general surgery.
Also, total side note: if someone says, 'Hey, pretty boy,' do you assume it's Buck, or Eddie? I assumed Buck. I was wrong π€£
