One Tree Hill 4X17: It Gets the Worst at Night

Okay. I was so much happier with this episode than I've been a while. Even with Chris! I guess it is fun to have someone to hate.

We knew Mouth wasn't going to end up blowing off finals completely. And isn't it just so very Mouth that he gets arrested for sleeping in a park. Lol. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this means that Rachel is gone, but I don't really believe that.

I really like that we got a prom do over. And that we all went with this retro style (which Haley looks INCREDIBLE in).

Is it just me, or is it surprising to anyone else, that after being pissed at Brooke initially, Haley pretty quickly is 'okay' with Brooke's cheating, because if she didn't, she wouldn't graduate. It just seems a little out of character. I totally see Haley forgiving her quickly for getting her fired. But it sort of seems odd that's okay with it because she wants Brooke to graduate. I don't know. Maybe it helps that Brooke already has a life plan lined up?

Luke and Dan both know the identity of the girl who saw Dan. And show up at her house at the same time. We already know Dan is willing to kill, I can see him maybe killing diabetes girl (I forgot her name, pretty sure it starts with an 'A', though), but I don't see him killing Lucas. He's totally gonna try to manipulate him not to tell anyone because it will hurt Karen. My eyes are rolling so far out of my head.

Ooh, or (and I just thought of this right now) maybe he'll bargain and be like, I can make the point-shaving thing go away if you just keep your mouth shut. And speaking of which, it totally sucks that they are coming after Luke for this, as opposed to Nathan. But, if Luke isn't really planning to plan basketball in college, does it really matter?

I cannot unsee Laura fucking Bailey in that scene were they first come in and the girls tell them its okay to crash their prom.

Yes....I think by in large Chris Keller is more universally loved than he is hated, and that's for two main reasons. The first being that Chris wasn't really a threat to Naley, and once that was established after the Haley tour plot, then all was forgiven. That coupled with the fact that Tyler Hitlon is such a great guy and the polar opposite of his character and had such a magnetic personality with the fans and the cast, that the show really played up his comedic timing with everyone, and he sort of became the go to punch line on the show over the course of the series, lol. Now of course he says douchey and inappropriate things, but he's not meant to be taken seriously, and is in no way a threat. Plus, it's another reminder of the sign of the times. As a society, we're much more aware of how things are said and done, and how a character like Chris Keller would appear today and come off, as opposed to back then. 20 years ago...he could be played for laughs without people thinking too much about it or giving it a second thought, but I'm not sure they could get away with it today, without his character having consequences.

Awww....The Honey Grove episode. I so love it for what it was, and the main thing being that the gang got to have a prom redo and enjoy a memorable night in another town. The show had a contest to bring One Tree Hill to your hometown, and these kids at this high school in Honey Grove, Tx won the contest, and got to have the whole cast show up to film an episode there. Such a once in a lifetime event that no other show was even thinking about doing. But then again, that's another reason why OTH was such a special show. It was most definitely cutting edge and always one step ahead with giving back to the fans, and maintaining a relationship with them that kept them involved way before social media was even a thing. You had to submit a video to the show highlighting how big of a OTH fan you were and stating why OTH should come to your town to film, and these kids won. Also talk about the Naley gazebo scene....another reason why that scene is so amazing and for sure underrated if you ask me is because the set designers and props dept built that gazebo just for that Naley scene, and then at the end of the week when filming wrapped up, they left it there and donated it to the town, so Honey Grove, Tx still has a piece of Naley with them today!!! Also when James and Joy were filming that scene, the rest of the cast was having a pizza watch party at the contest winners house and they hung out with the kids and watched the current episode of OTH that was actually airing on tv that night...while the JL's didn't get to participate in that because they were working and filming that Naley scene all night long. Just some cool trivia to pass along that I always enjoy reminiscing about when I watch the Honey Grove episode!!! And yes...Haley looked phenomenal in that dress and boots, and coat, and Nathan looked all dashing himself. But then again, they always make such a stunning couple together, and this episode was no different. They for sure win the award for best dressed in this episode, no doubt about that one!!!

On another note, much of this episode came about because of a contest that the producers or someone involved in the show started (It may have been Sunkist actually... OTHs in house sponsor lmao). I believe it was called "Bring One Tree Hill To Your Home Town." The rules of the contest was that a bunch of High School kids would make videos saying why their town should be featured in the show and Honey Grove Texas won. In the scene where the characters admit to crashing and telling the Honey Grove characters about all the crazy shit that has happened to them... those are the real kids who submitted their town in the contest. I love this episode and all the costumes. I love Haley's 60s-70s vibe! Nathan looks so dapper with that suit and Prince Charming hair. There's a reason the fandom calls season 4 Nathan's Disney prince era. And Naley is just sooo adorable and perfect!

IKR? It makes zero sense to me but it does happen on occasion and even the people who wouldn't call him a favorite characters gloss over the stuff he says. Like I see way too many people on Twitter posting his lines and going on and on about how funny he is. Sometimes he has a funny line but mostly it's just stupid and douchey.

Elsa Reinsch

So true! I love to hear other people bash Chris cause he deserves it 😁 It makes me irrationally angry whenever I see someones list of favorite characters and they include Chris but exclude Nathan! Like what is this bullshit lol

Elsa Reinsch

Wait. People like Chris? That cannot be true. He ends up on people's list of favorite characters?!? How? He's so douchey and gross. I also think he acts like a way bigger 'dork' than Mouth and they try to play that up with Mouth. I did not realize he was supposed to be a funny character. I quite enjoyed this episode and was surprised I liked it because it was so Chris heavy.

Dana Licciardello

It really was lovely. Agreed. She's always looking for the good in everyone and tries to see the bright side of things. Which means, she's usually happy to forgive once she's had her say.

Dana Licciardello

Not me. I see right through his shit. I hate him too. I don't think he's funny. I will always hate that Haley and Brooke are more villainized than him in regards to him preying upon them and he's seen as the comedic relief so all is forgiven. People are sometimes conditioned to think like they think and just accept what they are told or what they see. It's acceptable for Chris to behave like he does. Thank you for pointing this behavior out. It is not ok.

Heather

I adore this episode but damn I hate Chris and I always will. He is so fucking predatory and people don't talk enough about it because he's funny so people gloss over the crazy predatory shit he says. Just in this episode alone he says "I look really good when you get a couple drinks in you" and insinuates that Brooke should drink some more. He says "Do I look as good as the last time I GOT you drunk" which also happens to be the time he had sex with a MINOR as a FUCKING ADULT!! It's so creepy and predatory and that's not even getting the predatory shit he perpetrated against Haley. He's the fucking worst! I might even hate him more than Dan because with Dan you know what you get and most everyone hates him but Chris so many of the fans just love him and put him on their favorite characters list because he's quote un quote funny!😑

Elsa Reinsch

The Naley scene on the bench is one of my favorite underrated Naley moments. I love the maturity of Haley and Brooke's friendship. I would have understood if Haley was mad at Brooke longer because she really did straight up lie to her face, but I did appreciate the quick resolve after all the drama we get with Peyton and Brooke's friendship. Haley is generally quick to forgive after a short period of working it out, so it wasn't surprising.
