I think we're supposed to assume Jimmy is dead, but they are not telling us specifically so they can bring him back at a later date. But as far as Fiona knows, he's gone.
I'm guessing that Ian will eventually end up discharged when they find out he isn't actually 18, and that may screw up his chances of reenlisting in the future.
And Lip got into MIT. I don't think he ends up going though. My money's on college, but one closer to home.
