Outlander 1X5: Rent
Added 2024-04-03 21:00:03 +0000 UTCI was so confused and frustrated for a lot of this episode. But I think that really worked with the storytelling.
Why was that British soldier at a place that gives rent to the MacKenzie's? I'm sure I just don't understand history. Lol.
If I were Claire I'd be so exasperated trying to convince people that I was trying to help them when they thought I was trying to get them killed. And there is literally zero way for her to explain it.
Also, I love that they started to sort of have a bit of respect for Claire now, even if somewhat begrudgingly.

Would I love this show even more if I was a history buff? I don't recall learning really anything about history. (Granted, I went to Catholic school until high school, and I was so far behind and out of my depth in all areas when I finally got to public school). I mean, I like it now and I'm historically confused. Lol. Imagine if I could follow all the political history properly. Agreed. It's so compelling to watch Claire try to figure out how to reconcile her knowledge of the future with what she can actually say in 1745. I love that she's finding herself caring about these people.

2024-04-04 07:26:15 +0000 UTCThis episode was very important in setting up what was happening historically at this time, the precursor to the Jacobite Rising of 1745 (an attempt by Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie" to regain the British throne for his father, James Stuart) culminating in the end of Highlander culture with the Battle of Culloden. Claire realizes that Dougal is a Jacobite, supporter of James, one of the Highlanders raising money for the prince. Jamie couldn't tell Claire what was really going on, raising funds for a Jacobite army. What Dougal is doing is seen as illegal and being a traitor to the King. Jamie trusts Claire, but Dougal still sees Claire as a spy. By Jamie saying what he did say though, it did help her put the pieces together even with very limited knowledge of the language. I said a few episodes ago that I found it interesting to watch Claire navigate her medical knowledge from the future and apply it to this time. I also find it interesting to watch her navigate her knowledge of history from the future. In this episode she realizes that she's growing closer to these people with a doomed future. She cares about what happens to them. I loved watching her try to warn Ned.
