Going to Greenland. What are you curious about?

Im headed to Greenland soon to tell the story of people who live in isolated villages in the Arctic. What are you curious about. What should I ask the people living in some of the most remote villages on earth?

Comments

Ask everyone you talk to: What would you, as a person living in Greenland, like to tell the world about life in Greenland? It can be anything: history, relationship with Denmark, Europe, climate change, etc. Something that's important to each person you talk to and they want to tell to the world.

When Google Earth was in its younger years I cruised around with it quite alot. I ventured over Greenland and was surprised to see an extremely long orange-colored structure running longitudinally right in the center of Greenland. I always wondered what that was since it disappeared or was blanked out on Google Earth not too long after my first seeing of it. Perhaps it was (or still is )- a research facility? I'd love to know more about environmental, geologic and climate research happening in Greenland. Do any local Greenland countrymen/women work at any of them? I'd like to know more about Greenlands geological history and expected future.

Similarities/differences with Iceland. Why did they not develop at the same pace?

How is real estate in the greening Greenland being handled. Can residents purchase once-glaciated land? And are there any "downstream" issues expected with living space loss with the deluge of icemelt and permafrost loss?

Shlom

How are they connected to the rest of the world? Is there internet? Do travelers come by? Do young people go abroad and come back? And what do they want the world to know about them?

How the troubles affected ireland, economically and culturally

1. How are the people affected by climate change? Because the arctic region is one of the fastest changing. 2. How is the relationship to Denmark? Do they want to become an independent Nation? 3. How much and which parts of their traditional lifestyle is still practiced? (especially regarding alcohol, technology, welfare systems).

Do the people from Greenland really think that Greenland is huge compared to other places due to the Mercator projection?

Teresa Neves

1. People who live in smaller towns/villages tend to be more friendly and have a stronger sense of community. Does living in an isolated place make them more individualistic, or do they have a strong sense of community? 2. How does their work-life balance look like? 3. Do more greenlanders migrate over to the EU for jobs, or do they prefer to stay back? 4. Is there a military presence? How does it look like?

Remote villages in theory have remote customs and culture. Using this as a hypothesis, please approach conversations to surface local legends, historical highs/lows, and the 'zeitgeist' of their times. Chances are, there are elders yet to be dead such that you can ask them "who were your heroes?".

Would be interesting to learn about climate change tourism and how the country is handling/planning for it.

How do the people in the remote villages date and marry? At what age do the kids start their work life? What are the most important values and traditions that are passed on to the kids?

Mike Babcock

Has anyone in these villages noticed and changes in their climate or the ecosystem? According to climate data, the Artic and Antartic are being disproportionately affected by the effects of global warming. Has anyone there noticed this in a tangible way?

How the US has tried to purchase Greenland several times as well as other countries

This doesn't really have to do with isolated villages, but maybe while you're in Greenland, you could look into all the ancient fossils found there. Some of the oldest fossils in history have been discovered in Greenland—they give us insight into the evolution of our own planet and also key us in as to what life on other planets might be like.

I'd be curious to know what people in Greenland, especially the native population living in the most remote areas, think about the prospect of an independent Greenland. Based off what info I could find on the wiki page for Greenlandic Independence, it seems like most people only want independence if there is a viable path economically for a Greenland that exist outside the realm of the Denmark. (This being especially pertinent since Denmark's annual block grant will no longer be provided to an independent Greenland)

1. Wiki says 70% of electric power comes from hydropower what does the infrastructure for this look like? 2. Project Iceworm, an American plan to create nuclear middle launch sites on Greenland and the 1968 crash of an American nuclear bomber. 3. Local food/ farming.

I would love to learn more about the future of mining operations in Greenland and how that is affecting the native people! Background: as the Arctic sea ice begins to melt around Greenland more land is becoming available for mining. This extraction of rare-earth minerals is part of Greenland’s plan to become economically self sufficient, as the land is thought to be rich in the materials that are needed for modern technologies such as electric vehicles. I would definitely recommend reading some of the fascinating articles about this!

How the global trade has (or has not) affected them/ Their Imports and how and where they get them? (HOW MUCH? $ )

climate change, globalization and what they think about denmark and the rest of the world.

Will you be speaking to the Inuit there? Ask them about how climate change is affecting their waters. Good documentary to watch is People of a Feather. Also curious if they’re getting more cargo ships out there due to melting ice that’s been opening up a new shipping route in the arctic. Any Chinese communist activity out there? They’re trying to build a polar silk road apparently (with Russia) And ask the folks there if they’re happy and why. Safe trip Johnny & Team! ☺️❤️

I saw a video long time about a guy who visited and depression / suicide was high however people are super nice, is the number one hot spot for suicide

Less about the people, but I'm sure there are some remote hunters of Greenland Sharks. They have the longest known lifespan of any vertebrate species (up to 500!!!! years) and most sharks are infested with a parasite that latches itself onto the sharks eye. The meat is toxic, can be dried out to be eaten, it's considered a delicacy in Iceland, but unsure about its status in Greenland.

Cale Matthews

Here’s my list, and I’m glad you’re going: What keeps them grounded and going in an ever-changing world? Do they want to see modern civilization and current technology become part of their culture?

Deborah Drake

Ask them about history. What infomation they know.
