VIDEO: How Europe Took Over Africa So Quickly

One of the major questions that led me to make the “How Europe Stole the World” series was: How did Europeans carve up the second largest continent (Africa) in just a few years? It seems like such an impossible feat.

In this third and final part of the series I finally answer that question and leave you with a few final thoughts about what i learned while making this series. I hope you enjoy!

What are your thoughts about manifest destiny

Incredible story! Perhaps you've answered this in the past, but I'm curious how you go about planning/using archive. I noticed you have two archive producers, do you license everything? Do you use some free stuff? Or do you use it under a 'Reporting of News', or 'Insubstantial' proviso?

P.S. I've currently been in hiding from the Myanmar military since they took power in a coup two years ago. I've lived here for 7 years, have a decent grasp on the language and alphabet, and a lot of insight and personal records of what has happened in the last two years and why there was not more active resistance from the start, on the scale of the 2008 protests for instance. The military is currently preparing for its sham ejections which are due to occu momentumr this summer, but the resistance factions have gained a lot of momentum and behind much better armed and equipped in recent months, so if we're lucky the military junta may no longer be in power by the time these fake elections roll around. Contact me if you're interested in potentially collaborating on a video.

Hey Johnny, I have a video request. How does life insurance work, as a successful capitalisic institution? I understand how like health insurance and car insurance work, because everyone's always paying into it, and only use it sometimes - so therefore, a set group of people over a lifetime period will pay in more combined money than they will collectively ever claim. But with life insurance, everyone dies, so everyone is eligible to make a claim, which generally pays out anywhere from 30 to 100 times more than the total amount you've paid. So wouldn't that mean they can only be profitable if less than 1-3% of families actually claim a life insurance policy? So are they banking on the fact that families won't know about the policy or will forget about it? Or does it really just a big pyramid scheme that only works with a steadily growing birthrate and population? Or am I missing something else here?

Johnny Harris do you think you could make a video on whats going on in Hati at the moment, i feel like it would suit one of your videos perfectly.

👍🏻BRAVO, Johnny. Your latest video about AFRICA should be REQUIRED viewing in every home in Europe and North America. Elevator pitch: a story about how linguistic imperialism may have started and why it is more controversial than ever before.

Great video as always, not sure how you pack so much information into such short videos. Have you ever done (I may have missed it) or thought of doing a video on how Britain became so powerful, or even who the British people are. We were invaded so many times in 10th - 15th century its hard to keep track of "who we are".

My wife and I really appreciate you and Iz’s work! We really appreciate how thorough you are in your research. I really love your “How the US Stole…” series/playlist. I am wondering if your planning on making a How the US stole the lower 48 series? (or something like that..) Thank you for all your work! Have a Happy New Year!

Love it! I appreciate the mention of all the good that came from European imperialism. Obviously not an excuse for European atrocities, but it's a fascinating conundrum. It's easy to look at all the bad, but history is far more complex than that.

Also, when you get a chance, could you please share where do you get all your paper maps?

Fantastic job, Johnny! Thank you for your love to details!
