VIDEO: In Search of Switzerland’s Hidden Bunkers

Hey Patrons.

I’m really excited about to share this story with the world. It was such a wild little adventure.

It started a long time ago when I asked the simple question: “why is Switzerland obsessed with neutrality?” The answer to that resulted in the first video I made on this topic a couple years ago. In that video I mused about the idea of some day going hunting for all these bunkers I was learning about. Over the next several years I chipped away at a plan to do this. And the result is this video.

You’ll see in this video I’m more giddy and excited than you’re used to seeing me. That’s because this sort of adventure is exactly what invigorates me: being out hiking and learning in some far away place. It’s how I love to live and I’m really glad I get to bring you along for this one.

I hope you enjoy!

HA! I came back here to say again how much I appreciated this video. Looks like I'm the last one that commented though, so I won't. <3

Oh! Heck, I didn't write a comment on this one. This is the one that I discovered you by! And I LURVE it bc I found some bunkers by accident a couple years ago, when playing around near Grindelwald in Google Earth VR. I didn't know what they were though! One of them appeared to be just a facade only about 0.5m in depth, I was like 'theres a door looking thing, and a window looking thing, but it's decrepit, made of wood, and built into the side of this almost vertical cliff, wtf? it has no depth, what is it, an old miner's hut or something with one chair inside?' NOW IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE haahaha Thank you for solving that mystery for me! Unrelated mostly: I have a very special place in my heart for that area bc of my G.E.VR escapades, I just fell in love with it and spent literal hours zooming all around the glaciers/Eiger/the Eismeer station window (discovered it completely organically/by surprise while trawling the area for 360 street view image bombs {unmarked in G.E.VR, so difficult to find them, even if you know exactly where they are} I was out in the snow, finding occasional mountain climber images, and some scientific glacier traversing shots, and while investigating a weird lookin' rando dark vertical patch in the cliffside under 5m of snow, SURPRISE! Now I'm indoors and there's a picture window opening out onto the glacier bed... omg best moment of my /life/❁o❁) ...had no idea that existed, I had to research more to find out what I was seeing XD Turns out there's a cute tourist train that goes up there, I flew around the other side of the mountain and found the tracks and the big lodge, love it! ANYway, thank you again for this video, 🙏 I really enjoyed every bit of it. I had no idea, what an amazing history, so unique!

I have been a big fan for years now and this is easily my favourite video of yours :) The passion shines through! I now know the content I want is "Johnny visits somewhere, goes on a treasure hunt, and weaves a narrative around what he finds". I hope the budget allows for many more of these. Great content!

Going home from Geneva to Germany right now by train and I am constantly checking rock faces for hints of bunkers😅

Johnny, Would you like to do a video the relationship of Taiwan and China? As a Taiwanese I'll really appreciate if you can tell people what's happening on this island

楊皓翔

@JohnnyHarris, just a suggestion do you think you could make a video on what's going on in Hati at the moment, I feel like it would suit one of your videos perfectly.

Thomas Clark

Well done Johnny! Great Video, I love the fact that you featured (Col retired) Rudolf Jaun in the Video. He taught mil history at the Military Academy in Zurich, but i guess you knew that. However, I guess you did not know what was below your feet while you shot the last scene at the lake in Zurich… Greetings from Zurich.

Oh, and I think the coolest bunker you missed, there is a whole airforce airport in a bunker, its in Meiringen and it's still in use today, there is one video of it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfSpNVipZTo. I've been myself in the Swiss Airforce and have worked inside of it, it's freaking awesome to have whole F/A-18 driving into a bunker while the engines are still running.

Michael Schmid

well done! As a swiss myself its funny to see and hear how things thatat are totally normal are crazy to others :)

Michael Schmid

That bunker hotel is rad.

Michael Donios

I bet it was an extra special journey because it was in Switzerland 😄

Theo Da Kaffei

I'm happy this video is finally out! I've been waiting to see it.
