Welcome! Introducing the BTS vlog

Hey Correspondents! Welcome to The Newsroom.

We’re excited to share more of the behind the scenes, including scripts, extended interviews, BTS vlogs, Tom Fox tracks & occasional polls for upcoming video ideas. I hope The Newsroom can be an island outside of my long form videos where we can all connect - with you all getting a closer look at what we do around here, and being able to share your thoughts and ideas as we go. Community involvement has always strengthened my work and I want The Newsroom to be the best version of that yet.

Super stoked about this first BTS vlog – your first look at the wild and wacky world of our studio.

Lots of awesome stuff coming your way so see you soon!

Johnny

If you're interested in diving in more to mapping and more hi-res sources check out youshouldmakemaps.com - there's a ton of info you can explore

Ryan Shields

if the issue is the local tiles are still too heavy, you should be able to do the same workflow with mt cloud and use their geolayers plug in to stream it in as a tile service

Ryan Shields

Thanks. We’ve been experimenting with a program called map tiler which is a local desktop app that allows us to cut up tiles into a local reference directories that we can connect to in geolayers

Johnny Harris

Thank you!!

Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann

This was so fun to watch, thanks for sharing!

Evan Freeze

Are you talking the hi-res scans? I can’t speak for his sources directly but the David Rumsey map collection, the library of Congress, and university archives are great places to start if that’s what you’re looking for

Ryan Shields

I wish you could do the 2 hour versions fyi

Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann

Hey Johnny, where do you get the high resolutions maps? What’s the source for the files.

Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann

this is great, personally i'd like to a see your editor doing a timelime breakdown in premiere pro, showing the organization of the footage etc. keep it up guys!

Jgorch13

This was awesome Johnny and team!! Great job and stoked to see more of this. Also very inspired to create content on pressing matters I care about 🤘

Maxwell Muller

Love seeing more Iz content. Missed having her videos to watch! When is the house content coming out?? So glad to be able to support even if I have no idea what’s going on with the maps.

Jay Maas

This was incredible. So great to see Iz after a long time. LOVE the Japanese breakfast. I can't wait to make enough money to afford the 200$ tier :)

Suraj Devaraj

i also feel so validated now for just using an Epson high res flatbed and janky leveling for map digitizing so thanks for that

Ryan Shields

Regarding large files in AE: I might be missing the mark on this because I’m an AE/geolayers rookie but I know Geolayers works with Mapbox styles and you can embed custom images on Mapbox styles. If the image is georeferenced you can push it through to Mapbox using the Uploads API (not as hard as the documentation makes it look) which will tile it as a map layer and then you could add it to a map style and stream it into geolayers. I assume streaming it like that would be more responsive than local tiles but you could do a sample tile and see how it looks/performs. If it isn’t georeferenced there’s options for that too

Ryan Shields

Wow — this is one hellva vlog Johnny! Very cool to see the hard work & creative process/messy reality of how these epic videos get put together. Thanks for the effort you put into this 30min BTS!

Paul Carleton

Johnny Harris

Alice Ro

Super thrilled for all these updates, Johnny! Thanks for putting so much energy into this space and in general for the work you do. Investigative journalist was totally on the list of potential dream careers when I first started out. Well, who knows what the future brings! Lol. Just watched the vid-- wow, that was intense! So many thoughts and questions! Hi to Iz and the rest of your team! Thanks again! :)
