Expense report: GPU acquired, God defeated

I've joked about how badly my AMD Brick™ sucked a few times but it wasn't much of a laughing matter to me- it was previously a mining GPU that was artifacting more and more and had a blower fan that was clicking loudly as if it were going to shatter at any moment.  If that thing had died I would have been unable to do pretty much any of the things I need to do for my channel, and the pandemic had made it nearly impossible to find a replacement.

After about 9 months of trying I've finally been able to get a new one, so thank you for the support that enabled me to keep the funds on-hand and ready this whole time.  I have found an appropriate home for the AMD Brick™ and it will be well cared for.

I'm putting together the Skyward Sword HD review right now, which (probably unsurprisingly) is going to skew a little more towards how the game compares to the original in Dolphin rather than on the Wii- this should definitely be up before the end of the month.

The texture project revisions are basically done now but a GlideN64 update has broken a huge number of them; the problem seems to be that the game itself has bad mappings and GlideN64 was "fixing" them but in an inaccurate way.  Accuracy improvements to the plugin now mean that the mappings are bad again (new and accurate version on the left, which is now badly blurred).

For the time being the pack will have to use an older GlideN64 build to avoid these issues and the auto-installer has already been configured to only download this version of the plugin.  For the final release I'll have to manually offset the textures one by one until they align again.

I'm planning for a definitely-solid-no-more-delays release for the pack in August and after the SSHD video is up I'll post another update showing examples of the texture work that's been getting done lately.  Thanks again for your support

A tutorial is actually the very next video after Skyward Sword. The pack will be done by the time it goes up, so just hold on another few weeks

That's right. My location was out of 3080s right away but they had a surprising number of the other cards, everyone in line was able to get one. It's not great to wait in a long line but it's far better than trying to buy online and getting beaten by bots in an instant, maybe you'll have better luck if they do this again

Hey guys! Is there anywhere a place where I can find someone doing an installation video? And more specifically (and I’m truly sorry for this) for Mac? I haven’t changed my computer in 9 years but it still runs smoothly, I can even play games with dolphin but still don’t understand how the installer works or anything and even less for Mac… I mean, if it’s possible else I’ll just accept reality and vanish to a new timeline

Bet you got that card at best buy. I went there yesterday and all they had left was the 3090 at msrp. Wasn't interested in spending 1500 on a new part that would have required a new motherboard and bigger power supply, but hey, at least it was msrp.

Yay Nerrel I'm happy for you! :D

I only picked up SSHD because of you and I'm really not regretting it much. Sorta disappointed that the "all new button only controls" are little more than a motion mapped to the analog stick. Wish they would have put in more effort. Also wish I could switch between motion and button mapping on fly, love playing the game with motion controls. Hate flying/beetle with motion.

Dolphin maps things the new GlideN64 way, so the textures would need to be fixed to work there anyway. I also can't guarantee that users down the road will be using that build or even know that they're supposed to be using it. For now at least the old plugin will be needed

Nerrel

What will the new GPU be called? "The Brick Pro" perhaps?

JohnTheSlider

Why not just finalize the texture pack with that version of GlideN64 and warn players using a newer build may or may not affect the pack? Or do you plan on always going back to update the texture pack as GlideN64 updates? Sounds like it will never be 100% finished in that regard haha. Looking forward to playing it so badly!! Thanks for all the hard work!

OpenGL support should also be better, which is really important for emulators

Having an Nvidia card will be a huge improvement. At the risk of sounding like an ad, one of the really nice things about switching from AMD to Nvidia for me was how convenient Shadowplay is, compared to needing a dedicated screen recorder like OBS.
