The Intro
Anyone who's lurked around the Discord probably knows way too much about this project by now, but for everyone else, here's the deal...
I've been learning some game development using Unreal Engine. Like literally only started a few weeks ago. It's something I think I've always sort of done. My first "computer" was an Amiga, that I wanted to make a game on. I did a shitty little RPG on the ZX Spectrum, and spent a lot of time in High School making Halflife and Quake2 campaigns.
Even studying software development, one of my projects was a game. That software development has taken a real shit though. After a bad year at my last job and the things the bosses said to me, I've spent the last few months just trying to work out if I'm good enough to even apply for development jobs. It also doesn't help that with almost 3 years in the industry, I can't even get a callback for Junior Developer positions.
So in an attempt to try some new stuff, and to try and capitalise on the other stuff I can do, I gave gamedev a proper shot. Maybe a week to put some basic demo together and it'll be good to show off. Yeah, it's taken so much longer.
So here's the very first demo of the game. All the characters are placeholders. Eventually, I want the game to feature some elements of character creation, and generating the enemies, but that's down the line. For now, I've got Sian and the Twin models.
The Story
Once every year, the small village of Woodhaven holds a festival. Some places do this, but with chucking tomatoes. Others involve running away from angry cattle. This place is kind of like that.
The wolves of the town are fit and healthy, and are ready to chase down the participants. You'll be fleeing and evading not only the pack of local wolves, but also the other competitors, with the victory going to the last competitor concious.
But the wolves and other competitors aren't the only hazards out there...
The Stuff
Currently, the game has 2 enemies. Your standard wolf, and Tangleroots. The wolves are self-explanatory. Big horny canids. The Tangleroots are nutrient-gathering plants. They lurk amongst other foliage and are always looking for things to get moisture out of. If you have to go into the ground foliage, you either have to be sharp-eyed or lucky.
This is just a work in progress demo with the basic mechanics in there. These will be expanded on over time. Eventuall, we'll go from this basic arena to procedurally generated levels in a roguelike experience. The wolves will be created when you open the game, and will persist through the levels. If you wound one early on, if he encounters you again, he might decide attacking is safer than seducing. They will remember encounters and that will affect their actions later on.
It's also worth noting that at the moment, there's only one set of animations per enemy type. It's planned to expand these, including the player being able to stealth-takedown wolves. You can take a wolf out of action for a while, and you'll be happily holding onto your own stamina while you're sucking his out.
The Game
Finally, apologies for the size of the game. I'll be looking at how to reduce filesize for future releases. Controls and other details are in the readme. This release is intended for Patreon members, but if you want to pass it on or show it to other people, go for it.
Please feel free to report bugs or any improvements you can think of. I'm wiliing to listen. I want to make a good game. I'm fully aware it's just a demo right now and not a proper game. This is something I plan to change as I work on it.
