Lucky Penny (color edition) cover progress
Added 2023-02-02 21:19:13 +0000 UTCNow that the book is out, I wanted to share the cover progress for the Lucky Penny Color edition!
The first batch of thumbnails is what we sent to the publisher to see what direction they might want to push the cover in. The original (book-market) version of the book had a lot of right angles and I thought it might be nice to do something similar but with diagonals, to give it a bit of chaos and dynamism.
Luckily they liked one of our favorite thumbnails, and I was excited to be doing a new version of the cover that combined aspects of the book-market cover and the Johnny Wander exclusive cover. (Enormous Penny head that's too big for its space + All of Penny's stuff thrown everywhere. Also important that Boyfriend the Cat is showcased on every version of the cover.)
One of the things I was happiest about was being able to tackle the logo myself - we're super grateful to the original designer of the original Penny logo but we wanted something a little bit updated and more playful for the re-release. I was really excited to make the branch of the Y parallel to the N. IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS!!!
ALSO I only recently found out that C.H. Greenblatt is a fan of Lucky Penny?? I still can't get over that we got a new cover quote from him, let alone something so thoughtful. He's a super lovely person!
I added in a little graphic I made to showcase the original covers of the Lucky Penny b/w editions, I can't believe this book now has FOUR different covers!

Ahh thank you so much Danielle!! And thank you for appreciating the little bit of typography geometry there!! A lot of the work was already done by the font itself but I felt really smart when I put together I could make them fit together so cleanly ehehe

2023-02-10 02:01:57 +0000 UTCOoooohhh I love it I love it!! I love that the background chaos was colored in one color (soooothing), but still gives off the chaos vibe. ;) Great new logo, too! It's such a subtle difference, I'm glad you pointed it out! It's satisfying!
