I originally envisioned adult Maple as a panicky neurotic conservative-reactionary ball of anxiety, and she still does dip into that sometimes, especially wherever her daughter is concerned. But really, I think Maple is largely a fairly happy-go-lucky person, with a tendency to always look on the bright side. Even to her own detriment.
Early on in their marriage, it bothered Maple deeply that Merry didn’t like to help out with the baby, leaving her perpetually exhausted. Unfortunately, she learned quite quickly that Merry is an old dog, and very much cannot be taught new tricks. So she prayed on it, and with a bit of an attitude adjustment (and some happy pills), she decided she was instead quite grateful to have a husband who felt so confident entrusting so much of the childcare to her! What reason would she ever have to want to leave Merry, haha? And be a working single mom, slaving away at a crummy job to pay some crummy daycare worker to raise her child? No thank you! Life with Merry is far preferable. This is fine. :) Everything is fine~
Merry and Maple are not in love, but they also don’t hate each other? Merry views her as a semi-annoying young adult he’s tasked with caring for, a sort of sugar baby that does his laundry. While they struggle to form a connection that is especially meaningful or honest, they do manage to glean some degree of comfort out of the other’s existence. Merry likes not having an empty house, and he likes having a youthful-looking wife he can flaunt, even if he struggles to relate to a woman twenty years his junior. Although Merry clearly doesn’t view Maple as a fellow respected adult with good judgement, he is notably not uh, openly cruel or belittling to her, the way he can be with others. That’s a win in Maple’s book, makes her feel kinda special. ;)
Maple meanwhile still sorta views Merry as her boss, and maintains the sort of friendly working relationship she had with him back when she was his young office assistant. They keep conversation light, common topics are sports and happenings around town. She still brings him his coffee. The only real difference is that now they live together. Over the years, Maple has been able to maintain her positive view of Merry by simply never expecting much out of him. She doesn’t expect him to care about her interests or hobbies or dreams or worries, and in the same vein, she doesn’t care much about his. “That’s nice, sweetie”, is a common Maple-ism. She definitely doesn’t expect him to bother getting her off, but hey, that’s what Mr. Vibrating Wand and her horsey mags are for!
In their later years, she’s quite serene at the news that Merry is struggling with sexual dysfunction (psychologically induced, he is struggling with how old and undesirable he feels, especially compared to Maple), because awesomesauce! :D Means he’s largely stopped pawing at her, or trying to crawl over her at night. They’re getting older now, and they can both just relax. This may not be the life Maple had always envisioned for herself, but hey, it could be a lot worse. Maybe spent like 15 years as a dedicated stay at home mother and wife, and in that time she was pressured so much to serve the needs of other people (her daughter, her husband, her community), that she sorta...forgot how to exist outside of that. Maple has lost track of who she is, and what she wants. That's part of the reason she's so anxious about Honey getting older and more independent- if Honey doesn't need Maple anymore, then Maple has just lost a massive facet of her identity, "mother". Like many older adults, Maple thinks it's too late for her to make something new of herself now. She could never go to college, she can hardly remember where she left her keys! Furthermore, Merry says that colleges are liberal indoctrination spaces and ONLY permitted Honey to attend a public secular university because he knows Honey's too smart to fall for bleeding heart socialist propaganda. 😤 Merry and Maple go on family outings with Honey, but they don't really "date". Maple will accompany him to old country buffet, or to a neighborhood barbecue, but Merry is kinda grumpy and complains a lot, and Maple knows that, so she doesn't really imvite him to do stuff with her because he'll suck all the fun out of it. Merry insists on practicality and scoffs at the idea of taking a pottery class with her, or going biking together (with his bad knees?). He's not against Maple having friends, and she does, but she doesn't really have a BEST friend. All her friendships are mostly shallow and neighborly, she's yet to meet someone she can truly confide in- and if she did, Merry would find a way to shut it down out of jealousy. Merry clips her wings a lot, actually- Maple once found some success selling handsewn dolls- for cheap of course, as they were made with scrap fabric and popular with the church children. Each doll had its own unique outfit, and besides regular animals Maple could make fairies, dragons, mermaids, and whatever else the kids could imagine. The ladies of the community LOVED the little doll characters Maple was making up and sewing on the fly, and insisted Maple try her hand at turning it into a business and selling them outside the community. But Maple couldn't even convince Merry to let her purchase a sewing machine to cut the labor time. Too expensive, he said, too loud, too frivolous. A grown woman making little dollies? And what nonsensical things- mermaids, fairies?Hmph. Lousy idea for a business, if you ask him. He said he wouldn't invest in equipment until she proved she had a reliable consumer base, that the idea could be profitable. Maple tried to carry on anyway, but the sewing started to make her hands cramp, and the kids moved on to the next shiny thing, and she felt very foolish. Merry was sure to rub her nose in it when she was left with a box full of felt dolls she couldn't sell, and Maple taped up the box and hid it away in the attic. She hasn't sewn in years now.

Would Merry be against her pursuing higher education? He’s certainly wealthy enough to cover it without any issues. Is he also against her having friends? Maple's doctor suggested she go on birth control to regulate her period, Maple's mother gasped in horror and made her daughter change doctors. Maple's mother insists to this day on using baby language to refer to genitals (eg. "weewee" for penis, "gigi" for vagina). Maple got a yeast infection once from wearing a wet bathing suit too long and was so terrified she'd somehow contracted an STD that she hid it from her mother for 2 weeks. Her mother took her on a shameful trip to the drugstore to buy her daughter a vaginal douche, "Since apparently you're not keeping clean down there", which of course made things worse....Maple only found actual help when she started crying in the school nurse's office. When Maple lost her virginity, she was mostly surprised at how it wasn't painful or bloody like she was told it'd be, and she wondered if something was wrong with her. Furthermore, having to care for a new baby would really harsh the "mommy-daughter bffs" dynamic she was trying to build with Honey. I could see Maple getting really lonely and anxious once Honey's 18 and gone away for college, and maybe then she realizes hey, she's not even in her 40s yet, it's not too late to have a new baby to fill the void Honey left behind. I think he feels that by openly fetishizing their age/experience gap, it will make their dynamic feel less awkward. Make their relationship feel more intentional. Makes him feel more in control, like he MEANT for all this to happen. The neat part is, by locking himself into this dominating role of "Daddy"/sexual conqueror, Merry inevitably sets himself up for failure as his feelings about himself and his body fail to match up with the image of the sexy older stud he feels Maple would want.
