Yup, you've got it, Don's pursuit of Toffee was really him seeking a feeling of control, and perhaps a bit of spiteful payback against Merry (though I doubt he'd ever admit to that). Don has never been the one holding the power in his relationships, Toffee offered him the opportunity to have near-total power over a very trusting and vulnerable person. Worse yet, being Toffee's counselor, Don (perhaps accidentally, perhaps not) weaponized Toffee's longing for a father figure/older male authority against him. Early on Don thinks to himself that if Merry won't stick around for his kid, then he'll simply slot himself in to fill Merry's absence. As time goes by, however, this charitable intent becomes more and more predatory. When Merry backs out of a father-son camping trip, disappointing Toffee, Don eagerly, slyly, volunteers to fill in for Merry. And on that camping trip, far away from civilization, is when he and Toffee begin their physical relationship.

They imploded because while Don was a decent partner in private, in public he acted embarrassed and secretive about being involved with a uh, "larger mammal", and dragged his feet when it came to introducing Eva to his friends and family. It didn't help that Merry disliked Eva and would tease Don over being being in a relationship with her. Even after proposing he kept finding reasons to draw out the engagement and put off the wedding, and finally Eva had enough. Don could claim to be devoted all he wanted, but his actions showed otherwise. Eva knew she deserved better and eventually dumped his ass in front of his friends and family. Don still hasn't entirely recovered from it.

They've been friends ever since, and vowed to escape their poor little town and become rich and powerful together. Eva wasn't happy when Eleanor flaked on this plan to marry some tool, but she persevered nonetheless and became a high-flying attorney. Eva's favorite thing to do is to liberate Ellie from the shackles of church life and humdrum domesticity, whisking her away for extravagant meals, trips to the theatre, and even girls-only vacations. She's genuinely a fan of Eleanor's gospel music and owns several albums, despite being agnostic herself. Eleanor adores Eva and views her as a safe space to cut loose. Their friendship is one built on shared bottles of wine, expensive brunch dates, and fun bitchy gossip.

She definitely didn't want Honey growing up around him, and Toffee (still angry and bitter) was perfectly fine with that. Topher and Maple have a slower falling out as Topher can no longer bear Maple willfully surrendering her autonomy and dreams to his father and a snot-nosed infant. Things only get worse as Topher comes to express his queerness more and more openly, a topic Maple is quite sensitive to following her fight with Toffee. Maple decides her daughter would be far better off without her siblings and their poisonous influence. The Meadowsweet family fractures apart, with Eleanor ultimately choosing to move away and take her kids with her. This rift is not truly bridged again until some 20 years later, when Honey decides to reach out to her mysterious older siblings out of pure curiosity (and loneliness).

She's especially close to Topher, who knows if he ever gets caught by the cops at a riot or a protest, his first call should always be to Eva, not Mama.

Make no mistake, Eleanor tears into Merry, but Maple makes for an easy target as well. Eleanor becomes a bitter and toxic person for a while after the affair, and no one is safe from her rage, not even her own children. It's only when Toffee spirals to the point of crisis that Eleanor is shocked out of her anger and remembers her core philosophy of love and kindness. She will eventually, EVENTUALLY, come to accept that Maple was a victim in all this. But for a long time, she's brutal to everyone around her, especially Maple. She sees Honey as a living symbol of her husband's infidelity and corruption and doesn't at all object when Maple decides to start keeping young Honey far away from Toffee and Topher.

Also I adore how her fashion also reflects her personality, and if we are fair she was kinda right about Merry, sure people can say she was judgy but I think there's some truth sometimes in those friends that can see the let's say imperfects parts that you good judgment ignore cuz you are blind to thanks to pink color glasses of love. Ohhhh how it was when Eleanor told her about Merry cheating on her? She was like not very surprise and little happy cuz finally her friend saw the Merry for what he was "Oh honey I told you so, he was never good" or was like compassion yet angry "Oh honey you don't deserve this! That bastard we are going to destroy him!" And honestly I love but also fear/low key dislike unapologetic "big money business" people, let me explain is a weird feeling, but I looove ladies in power and good in their jobs, but no matter the gender also maybe it's because they tend to not be very moral? Usually they are very abusive, have toxic working environment, the power dynamic is very scary, etc. And the things they do? stomp others many times the tiny business owners/workers because they want to secure their place and don't let anyone rise up? I don't know maybe it's because usually I have a not so good opinion in lawyers much less divorce ones cuz Jesus they are good in cleaning pockets, but in my case is a culture thing at least in my country, here they are usually ruthless and save awful people of jail time just because those awful people have enough money to pay for their services, and divorce lawyers at least again in my country are so inmoral, they leave parents especially mothers with bad deals for money, and other in divorce because abuse if the victim is male they still make it seen as the dudes fault, or they make them pay insane amounts of money even if they should have the costudy of the kids no matter if the mother is abusive or even not interested at all in the kids, and don't get me started in the lawyer that are specialists in high crime like narcos/drug dealers, those are vicious and pretty much HATED by the public, and the sad part the most famous one in my country is a lady, heck she's even nickname and everything, and is famous in the crime word, if you want to get easy of trouble call her 😬 yikes, and don't get me start in the ones for SA cases, accidents in works, etc. Here we call lawyers "the devil's workers" and "blood suckers parasites" and find a decent lawyer is a bless and they actually consider a rarity. But again I do love her but also I'm terrified of her, like she would ruin my life in court if someone pay her big money and even if I am innocent and have nothing to give 😅
