far be it from me to draw 3 pages of merry/liv smashing nasty without checking in with our girl eleanor

Eleanor and Neith have met in the past, and they will meet again in the not too distant future. To put it briefly, Topher will meet his own rock and roll hero, Balthazar Baast, at a battle of the bands, where Baast has been appointed as a judge. Topher and Bal quickly hit it off. Maternal instincts triggered, Eleanor comes sniffing around, worried the god of heavy metal might be the satan-in-sheep’s-clothing that Merry always accused him of being. She’s relieved to learn that Bal is just a kindly (if somewhat insane) old ram. And delighted, delighted, delighted to discover that Bal knows her own music idol, the original funk rock feline, Neith.

notes:

-Neith is older than Eleanor (both women are in their sixties), but seems to just be one of those celebrities curiously immune to aging. She cites exercise, healthy diet, and enough hard drugs in her youth to chemically preserve a horse.

-Y’know, I originally imagined Neith as a classical trans woman, but lately I’m captivated at the idea of her being a big genderqueer AFAB lesbian. She’s still definitely some flavor of trans…possibly non-binary or transmasc, which would’ve been why she’s had top surgery. She’s definitely too old-school to use any of these newfangled queer terms though…Whether asked her sexuality or her gender, Neith’s answer is the same. Stud- a type of masculine butch lesbian (used pretty much exclusively within black communities).

-Besides stud, Neith also identifies as a butch, dyke, or bulldagger (yet another historically black term for lesbian)

-Neith and Ellie become fast friends and very much enjoy each other’s company, but also get stuck in queer purgatory where both of them are obviously attracted to one another but are unsure about acting on it. Eleanor because her marriage of twenty years imploded after her husband cruelly had an affair….and also because while Eleanor adores her own queer kids, she’s still operating under the assumption she’s straight. Despite turning into a gushing flustered tail-waggy dope whenever she’s in Neith’s presence, and constantly inventing reasons to touch and be close to Neith. Alas, like all the Meadowsweets, Eleanor is just a little bit stupid. 😔 She will eventually find the gumption to make a move, but for a good long while she and Neith exist in a state of romantic tension thick enough to choke on.

Neith meanwhile has been burned before by women who view her as a fun butch novelty act, or as a temporary reprieve from dating men. Neith doesn’t like this. She likes hot sapphic sex as much as the next jaguar, but that doesn’t mean that’s all she wants out of relationships. Neith is potent and flavorful but she’s also complex! Like fine wine~

Alright, cool! I thought that might be the case, sometimes I know you set up justification in universe for certain terms to still exist in a different setting, but sometimes you don’t! Not that they need a justification anyway, of course. I love seeing all the black characters you make, and it’s awesome to know that I was right in guessing about Eleanor. Would it be alright to ask who else in the cast is black? I’ve been itching to do some human fanart for a minute, if you’re okay with that! (Also, civets are so bitty compared to jaguars, I know they’ve got to be a cute couple, I love Neith and jaguars so much you have no idea)

I NEED to see this as a doodle, whether I make it or you make it, hahahaha

I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean how the word bulldagger came to be? I can't answer that, there doesn't seem to be much etymology research available on the origin of the word. What I found suggests that bulldagger may be a mutation of the word bulldiker (which also means lesbian), from which the terms dyke and bulldyke arose. It may have been tied to the slang term dike, which meant vulva. Dike was also used to refer to a well dressed man. So "bull"- aggressive, plus "dike"- meaning masculine. With bulldagger, "bull" may have also meant false (as in bullshit), while "dagger" alluded to a penis, so "bulldagger" - false penis. This is all just speculation by researchers, mind you. In any case, the word was popularized within 1920s Harlem, which contained a broad host of black queer musicians, particularly Gladys Bentley, an openly lesbian blues singer who dressed in men's suits, sang raunchy lyrics, and flirted with women in her audience. Her music is loaded with references to "bulldaggers" and "sissies" and coded references to her female lovers. Langston Hughes was a big fan of hers! Or did you mean how the racial aspect exists in FB? (As words like "bulldagger" and "stud" arose within the black community). *shrugging* It just does. Race as it exists in our world does not quite exist in FB, as there is no skin color and everyone is a talking animal person. However, I, the creator, still use racial coding to convey that characters are meant to be understood as having certain racial identities. Neith is black, Mal is black, Eleanor is black, and honestly a lot more of my characters are black to me, I'm just not always as "obvious" with my racial coding. Race is not tied to species (we aren't doing that clumsy ass zootopia racism) or where a species is located on the globe. It can be, like Neith was born to an Afro-Brazilian jaguar and a Nigerian civet, but any character of any species from any country can be any race. Much like how the gems in Steven Universe are all magic rock aliens, yet Bismuth and Garnet and Sugilite and Sardonyx are very obviously racially coded (and I love it!). Nobody in FB would come out and state their race, because race doesn't really exist to them- racial coding is more of a wink to the audience than a diegetic quality within the narrative.

God yes, old dyke supremacy. I can’t even describe how much I adore Neith and how of COURSE she got a self assured femme who gets her in a spin- I do have a question though with the bull dagger thing, in this verse how does that connotation come together where everyone’s animals? (And since there’s the term lesbians there’s sappho so I’m gonna headcanon her as some kind of bird)

Morghann Patterson

I for one am so here for transmasc lesbian Neith. You've already got transfem and cis and nonbinary lesbians (I believe you mentioned in tags that older Honey IDs as nonbinary in the future?).. And now... Now the Set Is Complete >:3

Lammergayier

The doodle at the end is so good 😍 I love that look / feeling that Neith is portraying like yes!! I feel heard!! I hope they get all the happiness!

Bob, curling his wrist: ...Nyah? Toffee, turning beet red: DO NOT

Love this interpretation!

May this type of relationship find me 🙏

Ren

What a beautiful image you paint! ❤️ Worry not, these two definitely stumble their way out of queer purgatory and tumble right into a relationship. As Eleanor is retired and Neith is loaded, they are free to make music and travel and be as disgustingly romantic as they please. Neith does indeed get her cuddles and handholding on the beach, there are many, many nights spent in bubble baths, in front of warm fireplaces, feeding each other chocolate-dipped fruit. Eleanor is made to feel so very wanted, treasured, protected...safe- and of course she returns Neith’s devotion in full. Also, not only do they canonically fuck, but Eleanor falls to her knees and thanks furry jesus she kept up with her pilates over the years because good GOD does Neith have stamina. At one point early on in their relationship Eleanor has to check into urgent care for acute dehydration brought on by protracted marathon sex. Neith will forever remember it as the time she made Eleanor so wet so repeatedly for so long she almost fucking died

Haley Riggs

**slides money** How much?

Ren

I know Merry and Liv us very not canon but I do definitely need these two to canonically fuck and be the sex machine who serves you breakfast in bed after with a bubble bath of rose petals waiting. Even if they don't get married and fall in love let them have that mind altering universe breaking sex with kisses and cuddles and pillow talk after. Let Eleanor have that reality bending orgasm Merry could never dream of giving her then let her wine and dine and spoil Neith. Let Ellie serenade that stud. Please

Ren

Bob and Toffe in the other counter, Bob sideeying Toffe: Mjau? 😏

If Honey's mystery wife ends up being a cat I'm gonna laugh so hard (I have a Couple of guesses as to who it might be but I am also prepared to be surprised)

Lammergayier

*Eleanor enters the room holding Neith’s hand* *Merry enters the room holding Liv's hand* *Their eyes meet and go wide* Eleanor: Oh! Merry: Ah!! Topher, watching from afar: Huh, I guess feline fever runs in the family. Right, babe? Mal: Who gave you permission to talk to me

Lopoddity

The Meadowsweets 🤝 loving cats

ummhallelujah

Well...yeah (scissoring takes core strength and flexibility and Neith has that in spades) but I was thinking more like...the very sinful and licentious act of Eleanor gently kissing Neith’s hands. Riiiight before Neith not-so-gently pushes her fingers into Ellie's eagerly anticipating mouth

Lopoddity

That's SO COOL! Thank you so much for explaining as well! You people made me see this whole thing under a whole new light! Also, I'm SO looking forward to see more of these two old women together!🧡🧡🧡

ErrorVittra

No worries, I get the concern. JayFlies did a great job explaining it! Queer people have historically "reclaimed" slurs used against us. Many of the more innocuous terms we use today, eg. gay, lesbo, twink, homo, queer- were formerly slurs. By snatching the words out of the mouths of bigots we neuter their shock value, in adopting the terms for ourselves we steal their power and turn them into badges of personal pride. I think it's rad as fuck, honestly. BUT it's important to recognize that slurs can still hurt, and that people are allowed to have differing opinions of them. Not every LGBT+ person wishes to reclaim slurs, and that's fine. Many LGBT+ people have negative opinions and experiences with slurs, and they're allowed to feel however they like. Reclaiming slurs can be a contentious topic, because the words are still SLURS. And yet... "Bulldagger" was a word I heard a lot growing up, my family used it as a slur against lesbians, as well as women they deemed "mannish" or ugly. I hated how crude and cruel it sounded, especially since I was a queer kid that liked girls and struggled to feel at home within my femininity (or lack thereof). But then one day I heard an older black woman proudly call herself a bulldagger and...it clicked for me. It was the coolest goddamn thing. She wasn't shying away from the word, she was fully leaning into it and it's implications-the rejection of classic femininity, rebellion, strength, roughness, sapphic love- and she'd adopted it as a personal label! Ahhhh it just felt so subversive! So empowering! And that's the first time I really understood what it meant to reclaim a slur. And that moment helped young queer me a lot, softened the impact of my family's bigotry. Made me feel that it couldn't be so bad to be a butch, a bulldagger, a dyke, a lesbian- if that meant I'd be like this woman, y'know? Even now, when I no longer identify as a woman, that moment still sticks in my memory. I feel Neith’s thought process would be similar. She calls herself a dyke as a badge of personal pride, in a show of solidarity with her fellow queer folk, as an act of open defiance against people who'd like to see people like her silenced.

Lopoddity

Please….old lady scissoring SAVE ME

Shaylin A.

Oh I see! Thank you for explaining :3 I never knew it could be an empowering thing!

ErrorVittra

There are both lesbians and gay men who do call themselves those terms as a form of reclamation. It holds no power in the mouths of bigots if you say it before they can and wear it like a badge of honor

AsTheJayFlies

Lovely art as usual! I'm unsure about the usage of the term "Dyke" from Neith though, y'know? :? It's an offensive term as far as I know, it's like someone openly gay called himself a "f@ggot" haha Still, it's not my place to police what other people should write about their OCs, I don't think you would ever use that term in an offensive way anyway ALSO OLD WOMEN YURI MY BELOVED I LOVE THESE TWO SO MUCH

ErrorVittra

As funny as an unrelentingly toxic a pair as old dog and hellspawn cat are, it's nice to see a sweet and wholesome pair of fine wine dog and heavy metal funk cat!

Bigsmile

I’m in love with your characters. You really make me want to make something of my own. ;;

Iowasi

Oh I'd LOVE this cuz they'd be a menace to society as a couple.

u got it chief ;P -Don't get it twisted, Eleanor is not the dainty swooning damsel counter to Neith’s beastly buff butchness. Once Eleanor is "in" on their relationship, she's ALL in. She's a smooth operator that can fluster the HELL out of Neith. She's delighted to learn that underneath the cool cat act, Neith is a big dumb silly kitty with a really cute giggle (that she denies having). -Eleanor is one of the few that knows and is authorized to use Neith’s real (not stage) name, Samiya. Neith tells it to her as their friendship grows, but Eleanor feels it'd be far too intimate and awkward to use to address her longtime music idol. The first time she does use it (instantly capturing Neith’s attention), is when she tentatively, nervously asks if she can kiss Neith for the first time. -Their first ever date-date (besides all the prior vaguely-romantic hangouts they were hesitant to call dates) was disco dancing! Neith to Ellie to a retro club and Ellie danced herself into joint inflammation the next day -Ellie calls Neith all manner of pet names, (sugar, baby, darlin', dumplin', shug, big ol' girl, etc). Neith has a couple different ones for Eleanor, but Ellie's favorite is "habibti" (meaning "my dear" in Arabic) -Neith is a big cat and therefore cannot purr. But she does chuff (a sort of low pitched rumble big cats do when relaxed). Eleanor, being a dog, is not always privy to Neith’s feline quirks (like slow-blinking to express affection), and is pretty confused at her girlfriend making weird dinosaur rumbles whenever Ellie pets under her jaw or kisses her neck or brushes her belly. Right up til she figures out Neith is doing the equivalent of a content kitten purr and proceeds to tease her FOREVER about it -Neith also chuffs when she's horny, which is. Often. When Eleanor is lying close to her she can feel the rumble from Neith’s chest send vibrations throughout her entire body, and it's a pretty big turn-on -Vaguely related, Neith and Mal sometimes get stuck in a chuffing feedback loop. They're not even aware they're doing it. Neith likes Mal a lot, though maybe doesn't vibe with all the nervous flustered flailing Mal does around her, so she unknowingly chuffs to her as she would to comfort a young cub. Mal feels more at ease and instinctively chuffs back, the way a cub greets a mother. This behavior is ramped WAY the hell up if Axel is around. -Neith knows all about Merry and finds him quite a funny little fellow. His sputtering little yip fits and various personal failures are very entertaining to her. This is what's keeping him alive and unharmed. For now~

Lopoddity

And how can we, ummm, put in a request for this....???

QuietZen

... How dare you give me a new favorite pairing 😭🫶💜

Thank you, that makes me really happy! 🥰

Lopoddity

I love when older people find love again~ 🥰 It's so interesting she two older people so different, I mean in the sense that the way you draw them is beautiful, you aren't afraid of showing the wrinkles, tummies, silver hair, softer parts, I don't know I just really like it. And reading their reason of why they are scared to try a relationship again is so valid and also really sad, and they remind me to the marriage of and former coworker in her 40s, so I'm going to share it, sorry if it's long and with spelling errors english isn't my first language. She kinda had a unfair reputation of being mean just because she was very femenine (I'm talking sexy clothes, pretty nails and make up) and defender of the most soft employees against mean costumers and when the bosses where assholes for shits ans giggles. And also because she was and is a very open queer woman that in her 20s was very sexual open, I mean that she had a lot of sex partner and quick relationships, but since I was one of the few she told me how she wanted romance too yet only had heartbreak, people always where so shitty to her, women use her as an experiment, as a tool to get attention for guys, oh and men weren't any better, they sexualized the hell out of her asking for threesome and stuff because she likes ladies too and where so gross, and sadly many would laugh in her face when she wanted to do something like as couple instead of just having sex, cuz why someone like her so confident, sensual and independent would want that right? That wasn't who she was... My hear broke when she told me how they would treat her and even make her the bad guy for breaking the relationship. And her husband who btw was also queer have the most interesting dynamic, he's the typical soft hearted sweetie that was a little of a pushover, short & chubby, and had "feminine hobbies" you cooking, baking, knitting, gardening, etc. It's hilarious cuz for all the bad bitch aesthetic my ex coworker had, she loved cars and since her dad was a mechanic she knows everything about it (and it was actually her main job but because problems she needed extra income so she worked in the supermarket too). People talked so bad about their relationship because why someone so pretty like her would wanted a "nobody" like her husband, also the fact that she make more money that him (cuz he had a tiny flower shop), was taller and more extrovert, well it's obvious, because he make her happy, safe and validate, treats her with love and respect, and give her all the softness and tenderness and viceversa, besides in her words "He's a my cutie teddy bear, hot af and people are jealous because our sex life is awesome 💅🏼✨" Both bounded about their delusions about love in their youth, they meet in a friends party, he had recently broke up with his boyfriend of like 10 year because the bastard cheated with someone younger and it was worse because the bastard was basically living a doble live, the other guy also have no idea of the 10 year relationship, cuz he thought he was the only one too since 8 years 😬. And this lady and mister have a friendship and everything and it was she who fell first and harder and basically ask him out and also ask for his hand too, and been happily married since then.

MiyaTheGoldenFlower

Saw this update while high and I'm gonna say it. My filter is gone. gonna say this with my whole chest, I absolutely love the Meadosweets. This entire family and every addition to an individual's llore makes me want to cradle each character in my hands and go, "This is my favorite Character."

Blizwolfthewolf

They uhhhhh definitely don't stay in queer purgatory. Just saying, if I did another mega porn dump (no promises lol), it'd be of these two old freaks

Lopoddity

Love Eleanor’s hair here! It’s giving Mary Jenkins from 227!

SketchyBug

God I cannot get over just how much I love your characters and the ways they interact with each other. I love Neith so much and I can hear her voice and Eleanor's and they're both so just. Ugh. I LOVE!!!!!

CJ Strahd

I am in love with Neith and Eleanor, even if they are in queer purgatory its still a great for both of them imo

Snoodle

And how does Neith react to news of Merry cheating and the divorce? Does she know about Maple (and Honey, from Topher)?

JoMama1516

HELL YEAHHHH. Can I have some random headcanons about them/their relationship?

JoMama1516

Neith and Eleanor are national treasures and I want more of them. Specifically of Neith looming behind Eleanor any time Merry comes around
