Pets

Long before the advent and popularization of synthetic meat products, the people of FB got the bulk of their dietary protein from insects. The insects of their world can come in far larger sizes than anything we’re used to, and have been historically consumed toasted, fried, barbecued, or just plain raw (hell, sometimes even still alive). However the modern meat industry (only a couple decades old) has led an aggressive and successful advertising campaign to associate consumption of their dubious, lab-grown meats and sodium-rich meat-flavored slurries as a show of wealth and health- and of course, to associate insects, a cheap and healthy food source, with poverty and barbarity.
In modern times, the big bugs of FB have discovered newfound popularity as household pets. Bruce owns a much beloved giant moth named Pearlie. She’s a rare member of a species known as Imperial Lunella, a massive breed of moth known for requiring precise, delicate care to emerge from its cocoon with its signature glimmering wingspan. Bruce saved Pearlie from a batch of discarded eggs in the zooniversity biology lab, and he adores her with every inch of his soul. Insects are not really known for their intellect, but we’re operating on my little pony/Pokémon rules, where pets are quasi-sentient and have their own quirks and feelings. Pearlie can chirp, trill, coo, and splat-land on the faces of people she doesn’t like. As far as pets go, she’s somewhere between a housecat and a parakeet, often chill just doing her own thing, but very affectionate with Bruce (and very nosy about his personal life).
Sunny’s giant isopod is named Nancy and he found her in a dumpster. In contrast to Pearlie, Nancy is about as intelligent as a roomba, or perhaps a rock. Much like a roomba, Nancy scuttles around Sunny and Bruce’s apartment, eating Sunny’s shed fur, crumbs, nail clippings, and generally anything she can fit in her mandibles. Nancy has no interests besides this and is incapable of love or affection or mercy. Her feet make creepy clickety-click noises as she scuttles about, and she likes to hide wherever it’s dark and dank. She smells vaguely of mildew. She would eat Sunny if she could. And yet Sunny loves her, takes her on walkies everyday, dresses her up in cute dresses and bows and posts the pics on all his social media accounts and gives her kissies on her crusty lil head. Someday, Nancy shall have her revenge, but now, this all makes for a decent living arrangement.
PEARLIE IS BACK OH MY GODDDD 💕💕💕
I've always wanted a giant pet moth Bruce is so real for that

Seeing Pearlie in a new form is so fun!! And Nancy’s little blurb made me laugh out loud ^^ I love the dimension this adds to the worldbuilding. Are there any other cast members you think might have pets? Or are Nancy and Pearlie the only ones you’ve thought of so far?

Also - what are peoples' thoughts about insect products? Aphids naturally poop out sugar water, bees make honey, honeypot ants...well, store sugar, I guess. But with big bugs I assume there's a possibility of byproducts. I imagine that exoskeletons aren't used to make tools anymore, but like...what do people do with shed exoskeletons? What about things like moth fluff or tarantula hairs?
Plus, a lot of bugs are capable of producing unusual chemicals. Bombardier beetles come to mind, but there's a ton of other examples (ie, the cyanide millipede I mentioned earlier). Do people do anything with this? Or is it more something to avoid?

Okay but please have my "cool ideas for pet bugs" dump:
Tortoise beetles - most look like they're wearing glass shells, some are gloriously metallic under those transparent shells. I believe most are herbivores, and Wikipedia says a couple of taxa care for their larvae!
Ambush bugs - part of the assassin bug family, but act like mantises in their hunting style
Trilobite beetles - the ladies get enormous and look like beetle dragons, the dudes are just lil beetles
Whip scorpions/vinegaroons - nightmare fuel outside, sweet baby inside
Dragon millipedes - cool spiny dudes who produce hydrogen cyanide when startled! I can't imagine how this goes wrong, ever
Crab spider - cool spiny babies
And other crustaceans -
Hermit crabs and coconut crabs! But also things like vampire crabs do well on land and are surprisingly agile?

Oh no. Isopods curl up into balls. Sunny is a goofy dog..... I see the origin of Nancy's hatred unfold.

I LOVE these two and think the insect pets are super cute (and more grounded than the past fish concept). However as someone who studies fish I do hope we still see some silly walking fish as pets! OR the teleosts could be fully sentient as well like the sharks. I need a problamatic trout character with religious trauma, stat! :)

Bruce feeds her a healthy whole-grain kibble, but Pearlie will be naughty sometimes and sip on exposed sodas and eat dryer lint

XD Bruce has to do that to keep her from eating fully grown Pearlie. Mimi wishes he wouldn't flaunt his delectable crunchable munchable gushy-innard filled pet in her face

The soda thing is such a good comparation theme! Like how even now sodas are a "normal not privilege people thing" in my country usually coca cola is use for people with high fever, ginger ale when feeling nauseous, and there's even more cheaper sodas that are more "trashy", yet have much much less sugar and sodium, even there's some cleaning hacks that use coca cola, that thing does wonders for cleaning a toilet. Heck! Even food, even if in my country we have a lot of fish in the market in general, is expensive because the restaurant saw how people like soooo yet business as usual, rich people like it and "poor people food became rich people thing to eat every day". Before they even give you the fish eggs as a extra when buying fish 😅

I wish I could have a pet giant isopod. Not sure where I’d get the whale carcass to feed it but I’d make it work. Insects are supposedly a lot smarter than we give them credit for…I believe it.

Assuming Pearlie doesn't work like real-world silk moths and does have mouth parts and a digestive system, what does Pearlie eat?

Is there social media discourse over whether owning an insectoid pet is "problematic" or not? The first paragraph makes me imagine an argument that owning an insect pet is a signifier of the -borsquois- -bourgousie- -borguoise- upper class, the response that it's actually a highly humane alternative to the comparatively monstrous act of eating them, etc..... or is this not really an issue in the FB world?

Pearlie: *trying to cuddle Nancy*
Nancy: HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR YOU AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

Fish are pets for underwater folk, but I think I'm doing away with them being able to walk on land. Not sure if they'll keep their silly stubby limbs.

As an entomology nerd, this makes my heart so warm and happy. I bet Bruce had to slap Mimi away with a rolled up magazine to keep her from eating Pearlie as an egg. "THIS IS NOT YOUR LUNCH, MIRIAM!"

Pearlie is adorable, I kind of want to cuddle her. I’m kind of afraid of a lot of moths in real life, but I have always thought those really fluffy looking moths (like Rosy Maple Moths) are pretty cute.

This is sooo cute and very cool! It remains me to this animations of animals facts that is like a comedy slice life shorts with animal-human intellect, and in one short, one of the characters have a bee as pet and it was giving the bee a walking in the park. Honestly I don't think I could live in a word with gigantic insects as pet, I'm even terrified of butterflies 😅.
Also that fact about meat is so interesting, it reminds me of how somethings are considered "trashy" just if poor/middle class people do it, like for example this "recycling trent" how reusing and saving materials is now "cool and new" and when I seee those videos I'm like "We latinos have been doing this since forever, not because is popular because shitty country situation teaches you to be smart with limited resources, never waste anything and save money"

Lmao I was JUST doing some bug research of my own for my own furry universe. Found out some moths can mimic other animals (tho mainly other moths) so I like to think they’re like parrots and can mimic vague language

AAAAHHHH I LOVE all of this world building and creature design! Reminds me of how soda was considered a special occasion beverage but is now mass marketed and over consumed by most.
I hope we get to see more pets! I wonder if a certain funeral directing hyena lady has a pet tarantula…?

Pearlie is so pretty 😍. I’m jealous of Bruce now. I know once upon a time you dabbled in the idea of using fish as pets. Is that no longer canon or are they also types of pets in the fuzzbutt world?
