The Father, The Son, The Horror

These were originally gonna be part of a biiiiiiiiiig sketch dump, but I started my new job this week and I’ve had less free time than I’d like, so I’ll be working on/uploading all my Toffee stuff in chunks instead of a big compilation. I hope you enjoy!

Merry remarries when Toffee is in his early 20s. Having grown tired of his too-opinionated wife Eleanor, Merry instead takes a shine to his young office assistant Maple, who is Toffee’s school friend and kinda-sorta-but not-really girlfriend. Merry divorces his wife and two children and trades them out for a girl half his age, and within a year they produce baby Honey, the tiny and bright apple of Merry’s eye.

Eleanor, Topher, and Toffee feel quite abandoned by all this, but while Ellie and Toph are happy to never speak to Merry again, Toffee can’t help but crave his father’s attention and guidance. He’s more than willing to turn a blind eye to his pop’s fault if it means the slightest chance of earning Merry’s praises- but Merry is entirely infatuated with his new family and entirely annoyed with his old one. Particularly with his soft-spoken, soft-hearted sissy of a son, who despite hitting adulthood has failed entirely to sprout into a real man. Hmph. What a miserable disappointment….

Man, Merry treating his role as a pastor like an act or mascot to sell a brand makes my stomach turn. I'm guessing he brought Honey along to lunch with his son to try and get some attention too. Though I guess megachurch pastors are in some way selling a brand...

(I am so mad bc my inconsistent internet connection deleted my old comment mid post so I am way later than I original intended to be replying to this hbdajhbdds. anyway!) I just wanted to say as someone who has had family just like...Out me , regardless of my attempts to stay closeted, to conform, to not disrupt the balance for the sake of others, I appreciate seeing it as a narrative ur exploring bc I just never see it even in Coming Out stories (which I understand why- that was traumatizing and I had no control or consent and not what Coming Out should be like, modeled as in media for a general audience ig) I feel so bad for Toffee, being rejected in full like that for something you pushed away from urself to conform in the world of his family and still being punished and abandoned for it bc even if you tried to hide it, they could TELL and they dont want you bc of it.... :^( I resonate a lot w the paticular set of wounds. I look forward to seeing more abt Toffee's journey , I think thats a narrative I dont see a lot and I consistently am rlly appreciative of the care and nuance u approach writing with for a lot of diff relationships other media has rlly struggled to bring empathy to the ppl in. Additionally, in the timeline is this before or after Topher leaving ? Just curious !!
