Mimi & Odd Doodle Dump

Mimi got pregnant in her last year of undergrad through a rather mean-spirited dare (hook up with the weird girl at the party by feigning genuine romantic interest, haha). You can see a hint of Odd’s college-aged father in the first sketch, on the left. The entire experience was pretty devastating for poor Mimi, but she ends up choosing to keep the accidental pregnancy out of an almost desperate sense of loneliness-er, pure scientific fascination. Oddball is her one and only spawn, the fuzzy apple of her eye, and the subject of more than a few dozen research papers on cross-species child developmental psychology.
While she and Odd don’t have the typical lovey-dovey mother-son dynamic, their relationship is one of great comfort and mutual respect. Mimi is a respected neurogeneticist and research professor at Critter City Zooniversity, Odd is following in her footsteps as a transdisciplinary neurogenetics/neurosociology student. Although Odd is an adult now, he and Mimi still bond over lunches of toasted wood grubs and an inexplicable shared love of belly dancing.

Also, is Orion technically a hybrid species? Mimi is an aye-aye, if I recall correctly, and Orion is a binturong. I'm not criticizing, heaven forbid, I'm just curious if 'hybrid' animals are a thing in this world

But for real, Mimi and Odd are really getting up there as some of my favorite characters! Hope we see cool aunt Penny hanging with Oddy and Mimi more, seems like a very goofy dynamic.

2024-03-27 20:16:03 +0000 UTCThank you! 💖 Honesty I didn't have anyone in particular in mind when I drew Mimi being berated, it's meant to be a sort of generic representation of how she was frequently treated. It could be Odd's father saying it, it could be Mimi's father saying it, it could even be Mimi's own inner voice, having internalized similar ridicule and scorn since childhood. Odd's father was not remotely interested in raising a baby with a girl he hooked up with as a joke. When Mimi revealed she was pregnant, he honestly thought she was playing a joke of her own on him, "getting payback" for the night at the party. He voices this to Mimi and even laughs, boy she really scared him for a hot second! And that's how Mimi learned that their entire "relationship" was built off a cruel dare. He becomes outright hostile, then later avoidant, when he learns Mimi is telling the truth. Mimi supposes she's grateful in the end to have gotten rid of him so effectively.

Im from the middle east and seeing this just made my heart so warm 🥹 also sad thought, is it the baby daddy whose berating her in the first pic? : c i imagine it could be any stand in figure who thinks little of Mimi, but im curious if she ever sought him to at least let him know he was going to be a father. I don't think Mimi ever thought she NEEDED a partner in raising her child, but still curious to hear your thoughts!

And so Bruce gets to be annoyed by one kooky lemur at home, and another one at work~

I suppose their storylines are kinda similar, both Regina and Mimi are both deemed unfit to be parents due to the way their brains are wired (except in Regina’s case, her situation is greatly compounded by poverty and social stigma against mental health aid).

2024-03-27 06:11:27 +0000 UTCOh it should be noted that it is kinda by pure chance Odd and Mimi turn out so well, Mimi was a verrrrry permissive parent (not out of laziness, she was just interested to see what decisions Odd came to of his own volition), and most likely would’ve struggled with a more emotionally volatile child. Odd however is very intelligent for his age and extremely precocious, basically a Mimi 2.0, so they get along great. All this said, Mimi did Not experiment on Odd at any point. No “Little Albert”s or wire mother/cloth mothers here. Mimi simply documented him. Extensively. Compared his growth to standard child development milestones, interviewed him, kept verrry detailed notes on his medical information and various habits. Again, this probably would’ve felt intrusive and strange to a different child, but for Odd it greatly honed his language development and fostered an interest in science from a very early age.

It's nothing *specifically* about them, just - I don't think I've ever seen media where someone's parent was a psychologist (or something similar, tho ngl neurogeneticist is more believable) and they *didn't* experiment on their kid. It's nice that it turned out well for Odd and Mimi, since the kids are (usually) not all right, but idk. Admittedly, I'm a little more sensitive towards these things, so tldr I love these two but am unsure how to feel about the trope.

What a funny little square of connections they've all got to each other- I love how interconnected so many of your characters are! The belly dancing illustration is lovely, also! This whole doodle dump is absolutely delightful but that one is just so pretty? I adore your color choice on their outfits, they both look lovely!

2024-03-26 23:31:41 +0000 UTCOk this is hilarious but really wholesome, because it remains me to my dad and me, we are the quiet yet "weird ones" of the family, of course we have our differences but when we need a buddy to talk random weird shit like analysis of a movie or show we both love, we always have each other, like people think we are fighting or that we don't love, but we do! It's just our love language is different and we are sarcastic brutality honest bitches 🤣 especially when we are gossiping about our relatives 🤭 Oh Mimi respond to his son punching a classmate is sooooo me I want the reasons but also like I have a lot of reasons why I don't wish to have kids, but one is because I would be the parent that say: yeah that little kid deserve that, action have consequences sweetie, don't mess with my kid 🤗
