"Perky ass" sounds kinda sexually loaded/misogynistic and it's definitely not what I'm going for. I based him off the character Gus from Mission Hill. Surly, but ultimately sweet and thoughtful.

Then lightly disappointed when his beaver beau reveals it’s just an ordinary regulation stepladder. Then absolutely delighted when his beau climbs the ladder and reveals he built it so he can finally be tall enough to grab and dip Toffee for a big romantic movie-style kiss

Trying to force myself out of my comfort zone tho. For this guy I also considered him being a crocodile, badger, or woolly rhinoceros!

2023-08-22 10:55:52 +0000 UTCI love oddball couple dynamics (probably because I live one) and I have Thoughts: No one ever expects them to be together, much less married, which is hilarious because they're seen together pretty often. Toffee has heard every confused reason why they shouldn't be together, starting from "Aren't priests not supposed to get married?" To "He's into men???" His personal favorite was from a younger kid - "But you're too tall to kiss him!" Topher is a little relieved that Toffee found someone who could be the stern half - not that Toff can't care for himself, but Toph worries sometimes that someone will take advantage of his brother's kind nature. While this *is* the case (do not try to scam Toffee in front of this man), this also happens shortly before Toph finds our beaver man also being a massive softy to some of the church members. Couples packs of chew bones and sticks *everywhere*. Learning to accommodate an herbivorous diet in new ways. A decent number of beaver guy's co-workers come to Toffee's church. Which - he might have been able to buy an old, run-down building to house the congregation (and tbh store half the stuff he'd use for outreach) and it gets fixed up weekend by weekend in exchange for pancakes and coffee.

I just love the idea of a gruff tough guy being a total softie in unexpected ways. Toffee’s husband has a million soft nicknames for Toffee (eg. beautiful, baby, beanpole) and encourages Topher’s music in a way nobody ever has and was 100% ready to be fatherly and kind to Honey and call her sweetheart and make her pancakes, but she makes it kinda difficult

I feel like people would easily have portrayed this sort of personality as some sort of "homophobic uncle" of sorts. It just feels so nice to see him like this.

And then I saw Toffee's husband <3 P.S. I don't know why but I think Bob would be a great name for him (Bob the Builder [Beaver]). What he lets people call him indicates how he feels about them. If you're a stranger/near-stranger, or he doesn't really like you (Honey), then you will refer to him as Robert. Close acquaintances or friends (Topher) may call him Bob. Family and a very select few may use the name Bobby. ONLY TOFFEE MAY EVER REFER TO HIM WITH THE PET NAME BOBBY-BOO (and only behind closed doors; if the other guys on the construction yard caught wind of the name he'd never hear the end of it)
