Nix has markings because her dad has an earth pony mother. By pegasi standards her coat is too dull and muddy to be considered attractive, even if she has the pegasus--typical flashy mane and wings (inherited from Rainbow Dash). Unicorns are even snobbier with their beauty standards. As Princess Celestia is considered THE ideal for regality and beauty, unicorns value a pristine, even coat (preferably a pastel color), with a dainty trim figure, a long horn, and a sleek, colorful mane/tail. Phoenix is not so much as offending Canterlot beauty standards so much as she is trampling them into the dirt. For Vogue, however, who spends most of her day surrounded by fellow slender unicorn models, Phoenix is a total novelty, a breath of authenticity, with a "charmingly rustic" (as Fancy Pants would say) coat and beautiful eyes to match. Also hot DAMN, dat gun show.
