Hair Tutorial 1: Fluttershy
Added 2020-07-18 20:14:36 +0000 UTCi've gotta a TON of requests to do a hair tutorial over the years, so i thought i'd compile some little notes on how I think when I draw hair. This will probably be the first of many little guides. I'm inspired by how when I was a kid, my dad drew a guide breaking down the shapes of the Powerpuff Girls and explaining how to draw them (I distinctly remember him writing "think of their limbs like socks filled with wet sand")....
I hope this can be a bit helpful. Keep in mind this is by no means a stict set of rules, just my thought process when I draw yellow quiet. I give Fluttershy (and all the ponies) much more hair than her show model has, more like a human's head of hair than a horse's. Be careful not to give her too much hair though, or it'll look like a horse wearing a bad wig!

Oh I'm actually gonna include some notes on that! Curly hair doesn't abide by gravity quite like straight or wavy hair. This is cuz it grows in coiled up tufts, which hold tension, so it's able to grow up and out. Pinkie's hair defies physics as much as she does

THE LAWS OF PHYSICS WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN! 3) "hair has layers" me, instinctively: like an ogre?

2020-07-19 01:44:48 +0000 UTCUghhh thank you!! I’ve always had such a hard time with hair, especially taking simple shapes and making them more realistic, yet still accurate. This helps a TON, and I kinda wish I had thought about how hair works before drawing Sweetiebelle in the comic lol

Like this: https://www.deviantart.com/rivenchan/art/Fluttershy-212833296 I think they flip it in the show for the sake of readibility, so the viewer can see Fluttershy's face and expressions no matter how she turns her head. Sometimes it's okay to break physics for stuff like that. I like to ditch Fluttershy's big swoop entirely though, unless she's using a LOT of hair product, her hair couldn't naturally rise in a big swoop like that.

It’s so funny to see you do a Fluttershy hair tutorial specifically, as back when I was a wee middle schooler, I made an OC pony with hair a lot like hers. It drove me NUTS trying to draw it from different angles. What does it look like if Flutters hair is swooped to her right and then she looks over to her left? They have her hair do this weird shrink-and-slightly-reposition thing in the show, but it just seems like Mickey Mouse ears where you kind of have to make a bunch of excuses to have her hair swooped to the convenient side. Urgh. So I love that you said “fuck it” to the big swoop and made your own variation

2020-07-18 20:32:52 +0000 UTCI'll do one on Rarity. :) Rarity kinda breaks the mold though, I imagine her hair less as actual organic hair and more like a sheet of shimmery plastic that's been molded into big stiff curls. It's got a synthetic quality to it and doesn't need to follow the same rules as Fluttershy's
