Earth ponies place tremendous value on the harvest, so gifts to their intended partner tend to be food and/or flowers (ponies eat both). To give a present you grew, built, or made yourself is a very meaningful gift indeed. Ponies in love present each other with bouquets, build each other sheds, bake each other treats, write each other songs, plant each other gardens- all these acts say "hey partner, i like ya a lot".
