Mimic Oasis [60x45]- 9 Phases of a Mimic Encounter

The desert sun beat down relentlessly as our party of intrepid adventurers trudged through the shifting sands. We were a diverse group, brought together by fate and a shared love for danger, treasure, and the thrill of the unknown. 

Our water supply had dwindled to a mere trickle, and exhaustion was beginning to take its toll. Just when we thought we might not survive another day under the unforgiving sun, the landscape before us seemed to shift. An oasis emerged from the shimmering mirage, a shimmering jewel of life amidst the barren wasteland.

"Water, an Oasis!" Shouted Erevan.

My heart leapt with hope, and the party quickened our pace, desperate for a reprieve from the unrelenting heat, nearing the wondrous sight of an inviting pool of water at the center.   

But then, as Gruff leaned in to take a drink, I saw it - a subtle, unnatural glimmer in the water's reflection. The water began to drain, revealing sharp rock-like teeth, whilst the ground started trembling furiously.

"Gruff, wait!" I shouted, but it was too late. The oasis erupted with a sickening squelch, its watery form contorting and shifting until it revealed its true nature - a grotesque, toothy maw surrounded by a mass of slimy tendrils.

The mimic lunged at Gruff with lightning speed, its slimy barbed tongue lashing against him. He roared in fury and drew his massive greataxe, swinging it with all his might. The blade struck true, carving a deep gash into the mimic's rubbery flesh. The creature screeched in pain, its mimicry unraveling as it reverted to its true, monstrous form. Lyria and Erevan sprang into action, spells and arrows flying through the air. The mimic writhed and twisted, its adhesive pseudopods reaching out to ensnare us. I summoned my arcane powers, conjuring bolts of energy to pelt the creature from a safe distance.

After a fierce battle that seemed to stretch on for an eternity, we finally managed to defeat the mimic. Its pulsating mass lay still, oozing a foul-smelling ichor onto the desert sand. We stood panting and battered, our victory tinged with the realization of how narrowly we had escaped disaster.

Heya folks! Here's this month's first map pack, as was voted by our Dragon-Tamer patrons, a Mimic Oasis! I've been meaning to make a mimic-map for a while now, but it always seemed like a lot of the good ideas were already covered. But, I had not found a mimic disguised as *an entire oasis*, so here it is!

This encounter comes in 9 phases, starting from a simple and unsuspicious oasis, to an awakening monstrosity, and finally, to a slain beast that is decomposing, and feeding nutrients to the arid soil!
