Magic Cat Grisaille

A grisaille is a painting in greyscale that is meant as a kind of painting armature over which color, often in layers of glazing, is added. Using brown and white is called a brunaille and green is called a verdaille.
The Flemmish had a painting style in several parts that started with a grisaille and added in brown layers, a black, color layers, and then finishing up. Not mixing in a lot of white is how they got such wonderful jewel tones in their work.
Typically a grisaille isn't as dark as this because you're adding color on and it can only get darker. I like to build up from dark sometimes, though, so I'm not too worried. I use glazing a LOT to get pure color and haven't had trouble with going on a dark ground.
