Finally! A DDB converter update!

Hi everyone!

It's been a while since I posted an update to my Patreon, and it's not because of a lack of updates, but it's because of a lack of time as I'm always so busy working. Also, I'm just really bad at writing update posts!

This week, we've made a big update to the D&D Beyond integration with The Forge, and I'm super proud of it! I know that it hadn't seen an update in a while, but it's not for lack of work, it just took a long time to figure out a solution to the problem I was trying to solve and it required a major overhaul of the conversion process in order to make it feasible. We've also spent months of work polishing our metadata support and changing the format to something that opens up lots of possibilities for us, long term.

This update finally adds the ability to auto import content that is cross referenced from another book. This was a huge pain point, causing things to be missing or incomplete, especially with adventure imports, because basic monsters would be missing, or spells (that would be part of the basic rules) would be missing in the monsters that were book-specific.

This has all been fixed, along with the addition of support for feats, backgrounds, magic items, weapons, armor, etc...

There's still a bunch of stuff to do, but we've made a huge amount of progress on the DDB integration, and things are shaping up. We'll be finalizing some of the stuff in the coming months, then the DDB Integration will finally be able to move past its beta status.

Yesterday, I went over the changes and improvements that we did to the DDB integration in our dev update livestream for The Forge on https://twitch.tv/ForgeVTT. It was the last one of 2022, so I also did a look back at all the big changes and achievements of the year. If you missed it, it's now available as VOD on our Youtube channel, here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkPz4By8l1o

(I thought I posted about it here before the stream, inviting you all to join us, but I've just realized today that I hadn't published this post! 😱)

Thanks for everyone for supporting this project, and now would be a good time for you to be reporting to us any issues or discrepancies/inaccuracies you find in your imported content, so we can get all those things fixed.

Thanks, and see you soon!

If they are released and sold as books on D&D Beyond, then yes, they should be available. You can click the 'refresh' button on the Bazaar when you're viewing the DDB category, and you'll see what books are available for import from DDB. I hope that helps!

Will the new 3rd party content be available via forge compendium and DDB integration?

Just starting out with The Forge & Foundry VTT, and this is amazing! You've made my DM life SO easy! Thank you for all the work you've done to make this available for us.

Hi, thanks for the feedback! 1) Yes, that sounds like a PDFoundry issue. I assume you're on Foundry v10, and I can see that PDFoundry was not updated to be compatible with v10 (since PDF support was natively added in v10). 2) I haven't experienced that, can you point me to which book you're having the issue with and which journals seem to be missing? Thanks! 3) Yeah, that's a known issue. Since we use Foundry to upload/update the files, and Foundry will refuse to update some file types as a security measure. We're planning on releasing a standalone application to do the asset sync (among other things) which wouldn't have the same limitation. If there's anything else you notice, please let me know! Thanks!

Hi, this worked really well for me. I truly love the work that you've put into this and really appreciate the final result. It should be a native module for foundry and even expand to other systems. There are some bugs though that I feel I should report: 1) There is a major conflict with the PDFoundry module. It causes the content to disappear from the journal and all of the entry pages in the Forge compendium (which is basically also the journal). Uninstalling PDFoundry immediately solves this problem. I believe it is a problem with their module, not yours. 2) When importing a book from the Forge Compendium Browser, sometimes it will not import all of the entries in the book into the journal. There is no error or any message that accompanies this issue, it just appears to be successful until you go to the journal and see that not all of the folders/entries are there. 3) The Forge asset sync is great! However, there seems to always be some links that can't be updated. I believe they are in the CSS primarily. Sorry for not being more specific. Thanks again for everything!!

Certainly, yeah! Although that's something that requires a bit of work and still requires a Forge sub in order to create the module initially. We're still working on making it more streamlined so users don't need the sub and can more easily export it to self hosted. If you're not subscribed, then you can use the 14 days trial from the Forge to do your conversions, just make sure you cancel before the trial ends so you don't get charged. Once you convert your modules or worlds, you can then export them from https://forge-vtt.com/setup They would still reference the images from your Forge assets library, which will work just fine as long as you have internet, but if you want it entirely self hosted, you can use the Forge module to sync up your assets library locally and update the urls in the module. Is there any way to take the converted modules and use them in a self hosted foundry server?
