The Battle of Algiers (1966) Uncut Reaction!

Comments

As an Algerian, I am very proud of this movie

Hey James, if you’re going to be reacting to more foreign films, I want to recommend a movie called “The Wages of Fear”. It’s a great French thriller from the 50s, considered one of the most suspenseful films ever!

Fr id love that to know that too

Glad you reacted to this James! I have seen this film but it’s been several years, so it was good to watch your reaction and get refreshed. I appreciate the points you brought up at the end (and throughout the whole movie) concerning war and people’s tendency to pick sides. I don’t wanna get too deep into this but seeing this film again I can’t help but be reminded of what’s happening in Gaza right now, and how so many people can’t seem to accept the idea that more than one thing can be wrong at the same time.

Hey James, do you have a Letterboxd account by chance?

The original Manchurian Candidate with Lawrence Harvey and Angela Lansbury is good too. Fiction, but good. Chilling, actually.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. 😰

After watching this, I'd also recommend something like "Z" and "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion". Both are great films, one about a political assassination and the meticulous investigation after. The other is about a police inspector who commits murder just to see if he can get away with it in his position

Yeah, had an older boyfriend who took me to see this when I was 15. Also a couple French New Wave films. Forever grateful that he broadened my horizons.

One of the actors Jean Martin fought in the French Resistance during WW2 and as a paratrooper in Indochina.

I remember having to watch this in film school. Felt so raw then I found out most of the actors were people who lived through the actual battle. The documentary style certainly helps as well as shooting in Algiers.
