I think this comes from Michaels years of childhood abuse, and him wanting to feel safe. A show that I always recommend when people finish The Wire is "We Own This City" 6 episode HBO miniseries, written and produced by the same people who did The Wire, and starring many of the same actors. Heavily focused on police corruption and abuse, it's about very real, and very recent events that happened in Baltimore.
