The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Uncut Reaction!

There was a time when people were very afraid of acid rain and I think this movie shows that off well. Everyone’s solution to the toxic waste is to either cover it up, burn it, or freaking nuke it with artillery. Also, that coroner guy was totally a nazi, right?

You're probably right. It's just that I know those old 22-24 episode seasons are a big commitment. But, yes, if he had any interest in watching the original series, he should definitely hold off on FWWM.

I agree with all of that, except watching 'Fire Walk With Me' before the original series is a mistake.

Part 2 is an enjoyable enough watch, I feel it does the humour wrong. The thing about the humour in Part 1 is that it never comes at the expense of the zombies. If anything, it makes them scarier ("send... more... paramedics..."). In Part 2, the zombies are frequently the butt of the joke. However, Part 2 does have Dana Ashbrook in it, so I kind of love it for that. Speaking of... Twin Peaks reaction, James? Even just Fire Walk With Me?

Yeah, this is set in the 80s. Exhibit A: The huge boom box. 😆

I love that Frank tells the "true story" that the original Night of the Living Dead was based on. He starts by saying, "well, back in 1969..." but the movie came out in '68. There's a whole series of sequels to this, but none are as good as this. The 2nd and 3rd might be worth checking out though. The 2nd leans a little more into comedy and the actors that play Freddy and Frank return as a different pair of working class stiffs that get caught up in a mess of zombies. The 3rd features a lead character that becomes a zombie and is constantly having an inner struggle with her human and zombie urges, while her human boyfriend is along for the ride.

Something that isn't really obvious on first viewing is that none of the zombies go after Frank or Freddie after they're hit with the gas in the basement. The "tarman" zombie leaves them alone while they are unconscious, and the freezer zombie runs right past them to go after Burt. The zombies only attack the living.

Return of the Living Dead is sort of connected to Night of the Living Dead. George Romero and John Russo both worked on Night, then they both went and made their own subsequent films. For Romero, it was Dawn of the Dead, and for Russo, it was this movie. However, I think the bulk of the actual screenplay and tone came from Dan O'Bannon, the director.
