Thinking of Kate McGarrigle reminded me of her last performance, a few weeks before she passed. She gave a very moving performance of Proserpina with Martha, Rufus, Anna, and others. https://youtu.be/ITyTquxTjhQ?si=Trn5KLun2b84f4Zs

2026-02-11 00:44:57 +0000 UTCA very good and important episode and yet my favorite bit was Daniel highlighting Morphine, one of my most beloved bands of all time.

2026-02-08 03:38:37 +0000 UTCAgree completely about the intentions but trap is the new-ish-school sound (think Migos, hi-hats on 8ths/16ths [lots of triplets and ratcheting], free associating flow with final words repeated) that modern coke rap (=Griselda) was providing a "new old school" alternative to. Beat-wise, coke rap is typically boom bap in line with 90s Wu Tang (not 80s KRS-One) in part because of Raekwon/Cuban Linx, which is arguably the first coke rap album and which has the wide-screen cinematic feeling that Daniel is rightly mentioning. "Shakey Dog" from Fishscale (2006) is to me a really clear developmental example of the 35mm coke rap sound. Lyrically, musically, and sonically it's an action movie. Trap, and this is not a criticism, sounds more like what digital video used to look like.

2026-02-07 19:10:12 +0000 UTCI feel like the griselda Benny the butcher stuff is intentionally made for old school guys who want something new. I think the proper term is trap rap? Or trap?
