174: Tankie Very Much, with Samira Mohyeddin

Matt and Daniel are joined by returning champion Samira Mohyeddin from On The Line Media to discuss the tumult in Iran, an Australian butt dial that works in reverse due to the Coriolis effect, and a sweet little sing-along to Jesse’s Girl.

Samira is one of the best guests and never disappoints.

1/2 way through and still no Phil Leotardo joke

Just want to say that "tankie" is not a new term, and doesn't come from the phrase "in the tank!" It originated in 1956 as a term for communists who supported Khrushchev's invasion of Hungary - it refers to literal tanks. In the last 70 years though, the connotation has changed really dramatically!

Samira rules so hard

Matt singing Sammy Yusuf was NOT on my bingo card!! I have to tell you that I laughed so hard and also felt super nostalgic because we played that album nonstop on a trip ahead of my sisters wedding back in the early aughts

Appreciate the nuanced tankie defense. I haven't been joining the pile-on of Dropsite and have no idea of the merits of the coverage in question. I will say that "tankies" have long-standing concerns with Intercept, Ryan Grim (won't stop defending the democratic party), and other similar liberal outlets that are good on Palestine but repeat imperial narratives like zeteo and Owen Jones. I think the business with Iran has given them the chance to vent their pent-up skepticism at people who have been doing really good work lately, but who they always suspected of being untrustworthy. It is what it is.

Matt, I stopped the pod to listen to Sammy Yusuf. Absolute bangers. As a Muslim I’m so stoked that you brought this to my awareness.

I'm Venezuelan and I relate to Samira about being embarrassed with the diaspora.
