Before I forget, I actually met Charlton Heston's love interest Linda (Nova) Hamilton at a Monster Convention in Northern Virginia. She was 10X more beautiful in real life than the movie. I didn't even know it was her, so when I got into the elevator with her I said I hope you don't mind me and the other weirdos making a lot of noise at the hotel. She politely smiled and with a little giggle she said it's fine. The next thing I saw was her being introduced as Nova. She was so drop dead gorgeous although Planet Of The Apes was released in 1968, the convention was in the mid nineties.

As a kid, I saw this as a double feature with the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage. It was re-released in theaters in '73. The running theme for me was the irony from watching Charlton Heston's skeptical snarky attitude looking for a better world/life, to experiencing a fate worst than death on his own planet. I attributed it to the outstanding script from co writer Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone series.

Another good film from a few years later that is a similar blend of camp and high concept sci-fi would be Logan's Run. Dark future utopian society with glorious seventies hair.

Yours truly, Johnny Dollar

This was an instant classic. At the time, this was cutting edge makeup prosthetics and we knew we were watching something special. And yeah, the ending was a shock. 😄 Edited to add: It also reflected the general unease and horror of the late 60s. MLK was assassinated the day after this film was released; RFK was assassinated exactly 2 months later, Nixon was elected, Vietnam...anyway, it still stands as the worst year of my young life.
