The ending is definitely cathartic and your point about it being so focused on the present moment really hits the nail on the head for me. Part of why people interpret the ending as depressing is because it doesn't seem like there's anywhere for Andrew to go after this, his future is entirely uncertain. But when you're watching the ending of this movie, you aren't thinking about the future, you aren't even really thinking about the past and everything that led up to this. It's just all about this one, beautiful, perfect moment of Andrew giving everything he has to offer and finally being understood. One of the most captivating movie endings I've ever seen, honestly!!
