Dead Poets Society (1989) Uncut Reaction!

One of my favorite and most influential movies of my teenage years. Imo, "poetry", as a term, should be redefined, in the philosophical mind. Not the dictionary definition, but an inquiring mind should look at "poetry" in a more broader sense. There's a beautiful quote by Wallace Stevens: "Most people read poetry listening for echoes because the echoes are familiar to them. They wade through it the way a boy wades through water, feeling with his toes for the bottom: The echoes are the bottom." It just may be my favorite quote. A contender at least. If you broaden your perspective just right, you will get that pretty much everything that you can have a passion about is "poetry". It's almost a synonym for "expression of the true self". It's not just words. It's music, it's love, it's carpentry, it's math, or marching in unison. Everything that makes you want to pursue a deeper inclination of your personality. There is a catch though, of course. You are practically listening for ancient echoes of your current shouts and in order to hear them, you have to acknowledge the fundamental difference of every human being (manifested by differing experience - the surface of the water in which we wade) while acknowledging the equality of every human being (manifested by the same wants and needs - the bottom). The catch is you have to reconcile with this paradox - feel the bottom and feel its familiarity. The sight is interrupted at the surface, where precise language stops, but the feel however, is a constant, although unintelligeble. It's not that difficult btw. The heart wants what the heart wants. No one should have problems getting that this variable is not a variable at all.

I would personally pick Death to Smoochy and One Hour Photo as underappreciated examples of his range and talent.

Two great Robin Williams films you should check out are Good Morning Vietnam and Patch Adams. Good Morning Vietnam is a great example on how to write a great dramedy but be able to have some flexibility script in the script to let your comedic actors improvise. Patch Adams screenplay is a great example of how you write a character for an actor that you are already going to cast in the part.
