Whenever Zionists dismiss the Nakba by saying “if you start a war and lose you don’t get to complain about it”… First, the Palestinians didn’t start a war in 1948: Revisionist Zionists were already carrying out terrorist attacks in the 1920s, and they had already succeeded in triggering a full-fledged civil war by the 1930s. And, second, Israel didn’t win the war: if Israel had won the war, the war would be over, and Zionists would finally shut up about it. So, as always, every accusation is a confession: Revisionist Zionists started a war in the 1920s, seriously bungled the British withdrawal in 1948, and now Zionists of all stripes won’t stop complaining about how unfair it is that they’ve been losing the that war ever since. As you said: the 1967 war—like the 1948 war—provides the rare instance of Israel attaining some Pyrrhic victory to brag about. They won that particular battle but have no durable gains to point to. So that’s what Israel is: a failed insurgency, one that is, to borrow Eddie Izzard’s turn of phrase, slowly collapsing like a flan in the cupboard. Too bad! So sad! Poor you!
