MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS!

Comments

El Norte (1983) and The Endless (2017)

Robert Kruger

1. The Skin I Live In 2. The Saddest Music In The World (2003)

Chris Warner

Dr. Strangelove and Return to Oz.

Late to this but: V/H/S (2012) and Rec (2007) and their sequels are some good found footage!

Tim Brown

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) - New Zealand comedy by Taika Waititi, starring Sam Neill & Julian Dennison. Lots of fun and heart! The Proposition (2005) - A brutal Australian western with a stacked cast (Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, Danny Huston & John Hurt)

Without doubt two must views are Sam Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" (1969) and "Narc" (2002)

The hurricane is a great choice

2 awesome outdoors true stories for you. Into the wild - a young graduate, decides to renounce all his possessions and hitchhike across America. Alive - Uruguayan rugby team plane crashes in the Andes

Excalibur (1981) - The best Arthurian movie to date La Jetée (1962) - the French New Wave short film that was the inspiration for Gilliam's 12 Monkeys

Christiaan Van den Akker

The Hurricane (1999) ,Mystic River (2003)

søren knudsen

How about 2001? More Kubrick is always a good thing, and that film is a monumental piece of art.

Fantastic movie for sure

W T

I second both films, each one definitely unique and so, so funny.

Brett Coster

Playtime (1967) by Jacques Tati. A work of art you can laugh at, a beautiful observational satire of modern life. Tampopo (1985) I see is described as comedy/western but it is one of the best food-based movies about contemporary Japan you will ever find (I know, out of the entire list!)

Paul Steffens

The Hudsucker Proxy is one of my favorite Coens movies

Paul Steffens

Son of Saul The Tale of the princess Kaguya

This.

Jessi

The Birdcage

Kaitlin

Brotherhood of the Wolf Robin Hood: Men in Tights

End of Watch and, er, something out of left field.. Predestination.

Martin Nicholls

M is amazing

Kaitlin

Short Term 12 is one of my favorites and so underrated

Psycho Goreman and Attack the Block.

Mike B

Dark City! It came out right before The Matrix and is (somewhat) controversial over wether or not the Wachowski Sisters stole the idea from Dark City. My second choice would be Embrace the Serpent. Super deep film that’s an absolute eyegasm

I don't think I've seen any reactions to Ben Wheatley's A Field in England or Sightseers. Also, something by Takaashi Miike maybe Audition or Ichi the Killer.

PretendItsCool

both great, but particularly into a field in england. I don't think i've seen anyone react to that movie and he's never done any Ben Wheatley films.

PretendItsCool

A Christmas Story is an imperative holiday movie. A must in December!

Juley

I’m on team Lost in Translation!

Juley

Such a terrific movie! Oscars for Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin. Harvey Keitel and Sam Neill are fabulous too. Jane Campion (Director/writer) has an amazing filmography.

Juley

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), because no one else has ever reacted to it properly - Top Secret (1984), from the Airplane team and also Val Kilmer's debut. A joke, pun or visual gag pretty much every single minute throughout.

2old4gamez

The Boondock Saints (1999) and Team America: World Police (2004)

Eik104

I second Alpha Dog

Eik104

1. Rumble in the Bronx 2. Legend of Drunken Master 2 It's time to meet Jackie Chan ! Here's one of his American films, and the all-time classic LoDM2 (not a sequel).

Michael Llaneza

1. Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993) 2. Airplane 2 Amazing comedies, up there with Airplane and Naked Gun

Ink

Chad Crayton

1- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 2- Das Boot (in german with eng subtitles, only way to watch)

F Yale

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai! One of my favorite films and Forrest Whitaker performances!

JPOlsen

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) It's hilarious and dark at the same time, one of my favorite Kubrick movies.

Daniel Malefitz

One Cut of the Dead

Metropolitan (1990) and Blindspotting (2018)!

Rickard Blixt

Un prophète (2009) - Jacques Audiard Vuelven (2017) - Issa López

Sonia Deepak

"Rushmore" - so har wit how far he evolved but to me his 2nd film remains my all time favorite. And "American Hustle" - a masterpiece. Thanks!

Drew W

I'd like to suggest a couple (more, actually) of classic German films: 1. Metropolis (1927 - using the 2010 reconstructed version) as a real trendsetter for later sci-fi 2. M (1931) the first great police procedural Both were made at the peak of 20s/30s moviemaking and have certainly influenced later films. M uses sound really effectively, not too bad for a first effort.

Brett Coster

I second Jacob's Ladder (just searched James' back catalogue cos I thought he'd already reviewed it, but not so.)

Brett Coster

Whiplash (2014) The Great Escape (1963)

I second Ravenous (although I'm suggesting two other films). Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle in a western, with something extra. Would be a great double with Ginger Snaps.

Brett Coster

Muriel's Wedding is a blast, especially now that Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths have gone on to much bigger things.

Brett Coster

Welcome to The Dollhouse and Pather Panchali

kimsmk

The Third Man (1949) directed by Carol Reed. The Player (1992) directed by Robert Altman.

Damian Christopher

I have mixed feelings with Affleck - a lot I dislike, but yet, I really like a lot, too. This suggestion list is reminding me of all kinds of movies I really need to re-watch. The Town, another I was fortunate to see in theatre. Haven't seen it since, but really liked it. I see The Hudsucker Proxy mentioned, too. Another I really have to re-watch.

Luke Trottier

I really have to re-watch this. I was too young when I did, and only once. But I remember I liked it, and have often thought about re-watching.

Luke Trottier

Another classic I was fortunate to see in theatres. :)

Luke Trottier

Totally love Do The Right Thing.

Luke Trottier

Excellent suggestion, too. Lots of ones I am pleasantly surprised to see. Powerful, and really, really cool art style.

Luke Trottier

Man, excellent suggestions. I remember seeing Stranger Than Fiction in theatre, and buying the dvd/re-watching multiple times. It's been many years now, would love to re-watch it. I love After Hours. I love how Martin makes the the city of New York 'alive' and almost an entity. Even just the steam coming from the sewer drains, as if it has a hellish underbelly. I've suggested After Hours to a few reactors. I am seeing tons of great suggestions here that I don't really see anyone normally suggest or react to.

Luke Trottier

I still remember watching this in an old school privately owned (private as in, a singular theatre, and an old one with unique character, not part of a large chain, sort of a dying thing in many places, or no longer existing) cinema with subtitles when I was 16. Excellent film. I bought the DVD not long after and re-watched it several times. Haven't seen it in probably 10+ years now... I definitely have to again.

Luke Trottier

DUNE

Eric Hutton

The Tree of Life (2011) dir. Terrence Malick Frances Ha (2013) dir. Noah Baumbach

Grunwalski

Amadeus (1984). At first glance, a Bio Pic about an 18th Century composer might seem to be kind of on the dry side, but I promise you it's not. One of the best movies of the 80's.

Carl Lyngholm

♥️ Steel Magnolias ♥️

Melody Johnson

The Piano

Cameron Berry

Oh I just got done watching Possession for the first time the other week. Bonkers! Loved it!

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

Sorcerer is so great! I think I like it a little more than Wages of Fear.

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

I was just thinking recently Being There would be a lot of fun for this channel. I certainly would like to watch.

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

Miller's Crossing from the Coen brother's (1990) Hoping this recommendation doesn't get left out here to die out here like a dumb animal.

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

I recently just bought a copy of Land and Freedom. That Ken Loach film looks really interesting.

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

It would be great if you ever got around to watching Downfall (2004), I know it's been mentioned before but I really think it's an important film, with the themes it carries, and as a bonus has some impeccable acting

One Cut Of The Dead (2017) - A Japanese zombie movie that, as a filmmaker, I do believe you will greatly appreciate. Unexpected and very clever! Predestination (2014) - A journey down inventive and mind-bending storytelling. I watched it on a whim one night ages ago when I couldn't sleep and have recommended to it to everyone I know that appreciates thought provoking cinema.

Nonimal

Everyone’s gotta see Rocky at least once

Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989) — Steven Soderbergh’s first film - it’s in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" Muriel’s Wedding (1995) — just cuz it’s hilarious

Juley

1. Abres Los Ojos aka Open Your Eyes It has a lot of surrealist aspects (think Mulholland Drive) and is mind-bending. Quality story, original, and well put together. Unlike Mulholland Drive, by the time it is over, you can absolutely 100% understand the full film on first viewing. Some may be confused or lost, but many won't, and I don't believe you will. That's not to say it's better or worse than Mulholland Drive for that, just pointing it out. 2. Lost Highway by David Lynch Which is more also mind-bending surrealist, and like Mulholland Drive, you aren't going to be able to fully 'get' everything on a first viewing. However, it is an experience. A brilliant film, in my opinion. My favourite Lynch movie, and also in my opinion it is easier than Mulholland Drive to independently get a firm grasp on, though I seem to be in the minority who think so. I view it as a twin film to Mulholland Drive. To over-simplify... Same story/plot, with a different face. Upon first glance, they are totally different. But upon closer examination, in my opinion they very closely relate to each other in fundamental themes, even if the face of the coin is different.

Luke Trottier

I think it's time for Network(1976). Or how about Carlito's Way(1993)?

H Blackwell

A big yes on “Pump Up the Volume”!

Let's go early to mid-80s .... Real Genius (1983) starring Val Kilmer ... Quick-witted Comedy about genius college students based on CalTech Breakfast Club (1985) ... Comedy/Drama about 5 high school delinquents spending Saturday at the high school in detention. One of John Hughes' best films ever! Bonus (if you can find it) ... Pump Up The Volume (1990) starring Christian Slater (who claims it is the one work he wants to be most remembered for) ... Drama (mostly) about a quiet high school senior by day and at night turns into a pirate DJ named Happy Hairy Hardon

McLovin

Carlitos way, Das Boot

Rango The Iron Giant Two highly underrated animated classics.

Matthew Richson

Police Story The Wild Bunch

Justin McDonald

The Cell People scoff at seeing Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn, but Vince plays a legit serious role. It also has the amazing Vincent D'Onofrio. Very stylized, very brutal, a lot of focus on imagery and ambiance. It's like a psychological sci-fi thriller. Focused around a very specialized therapist and a serial killer, using some technology to enter their dreams (this came out 10 years before Inception) to aid the investigation. Very worth it.

Cifer

Primal Fear is great

Sorry to bother you, it's fun and insane. And Shallow Grave is the movie Danny Boyle made before Trainspotting, very underrated, great Ewan Mcgregor performance :)

Emma. (2020) Primal Fear (1996)

J.S.Leeds

Yo. Aight my first recommendation is Manchester by the Sea starring Casey Affleck who won an oscar for it, my second recommendation is Amadeus which won best picture.

Emil Larsson

“Paris,Texas” or “Mommy”

James has to see the Craig-Bond films at some point if he already hasn’t

1. Eyes Wide Shut (Kubrick’s final film and in my opinion his best) 2. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Great western with Paul Newman and Robert Redford)

Parasite and The Lives of Others

Mute Same director as Moon, also same universe, so if you wanna know what happens to the main character in Moon, you get an easter egg in this movie!

Andrew Seigner

“Legend” with Tom Hardy, The Hateful Eight

I'd like to submit speed racer and blade 2. Take care James!
